Lynch complements the roundtable's insights with data from the Middle East Scholars Barometer about how academics in our discipline are already using AI (or not) and the implications of AI for how people learn about and understand the region's politics.

This morning, Marc Lynch also has a post up on his blog highlighting and reflecting on this roundtable (which he calls "pathbreaking") and Rich's essay. abuaardvarkghost.ghost.io/ai-and-middl...

These interventions should be of interest to a wide range of academics and policy-oriented scholars who move between large-n quantitative analyses and more humanistic modes of investigation, and to the consumers of their research.

At the same time, he reflects on the sobering challenges GenAI poses for training and launching the next generation of scholars.

The roundtable is accompanied by an essay by Rich Nielsen arguing, among other things, that the emergence of powerful GenAI capabilities comparatively elevates the importance of ethnographic, qualitative, and interpretive work in our field as a distinctly human enterprise.

They have important things to say about the uses and limitations of AI in the kinds of research we do and the settings we do it in, especially for those who work with historical, textual, or survey data.

📢New issue of #PAG21 is out!📢 @cbarns.bsky.social , Michael FitzGerald, @katiekrumbholz.bsky.social & @manika.bsky.social outline the trends in publishing in P&G compared to general-interest and other gender and politics journals in "What Does Politics & Gender Publish? " buff.ly/78zQfiN
Research article "What Does Politics & Gender Publish? Trends, Methods, and Topics in Gender and Politics Research" by Carolyn Barnett, Michael FitzGerald, Katie Krumbholz and Manika Lamba.
Abstract begins: We draw on a comprehensive dataset of metadata about journal articles substantively related to gender and politics published in 37 political science journals through the end of 2023, including Politics & Gender, to characterize and compare trends over time and the most prominent topics addressed by these journals. We show that the volume of work published by Politics & Gender has increased over time, has become increasingly quantitative in nature, and tends to focus on questions related to women running for political office and the nature of women’s political representation. These patterns closely reflect broader tendencies in the gender and politics research published by general-interest political science journals.
