Calls: Lexique - "Special Issue: Language, End of Life, Death, and Bereavement" (Jrnl)
Since the advent of transdisciplinary death studies in the 1970s, a plethora of research has been conducted in the humanities and social sciences on death-related issues, including end-of-life conditions and bereavement. This research has been undertaken in fields such as anthropology, history, psychology, philosophy, and sociology (see for example Thomas 1975; Aries 1977; Baudry 1999; Boltanski 2004; Molinié 2006; Clavandier 2009; Despret 2015; Boltanski 2004). “AI” isn’t a tool or technology or even a cluster of technologies with a misleading name. It’s the infrastructure at the foundation of a form of capitalism dependent on data brokering. We should be teaching our students about this and not teaching them about “responsible” use.

Confs: World Englishes on the Stage and Screen
This symposium aims at bringing together researchers working on World Englishes (especially those focusing on varieties of English other than the “inner circle” varieties of the British Isles and North America) in staged and mediatized performances. While it cannot be said that such a perspective has hitherto been ignored in linguistic research (see Lee & Kachru 2006; Moody 2021), it is evident that pop cultural artifacts serving entertainment and recreational purposes, such as films and TV seri

Neat graph crime in the flyer about the referendum on Munich's candidacy to host the Olympics 🙃
A bar chart comparing the number of visitors to the Paris Olympics (11.2 million) to the number visitors to the Oktoberfest last year (6.7 million) and the estimated number of visitors to hypothetical olympic games in Munich (7.5 million). The bar supposed to represent 11.2 million is nearly as tall as the other two. The bars were cropped.

@gralefrit.bsky.social You have to see these! A friend of mine has been collating a series of images entitled "Things my students have written turned into Philomena Cunk quotes" and they're just glorious.
Philomena Cunk against a collection of classical statues. "Antigone's death is even more tragic than it actually is, which makes her a tragic hero"Philomena Cunk looking thoughtful. "Goya continued to paint tapestries until 1792 when serious illness left him dead for life"Philomena Cunk looking thoughtfully into the distance. "Society is slowly becoming more contemporary now"Philomena Cunk looking into camera on a beach. "Diderot's Tahiti represents a typical male fantasy in which attractive young women are eager to engage in sexual activity with the French"
