Richard Dixon @catinsight.bsky.social · 21hWhen I used to reconstruct windfields from as much data as I could glean back in the mid 2000s I'd often find that the empirical wind profiles I'd try to fit I'd often have to scale back by 5-10 pct. I always assumed that the values err on the upper side out of caution. 000

Richard Dixon @catinsight.bsky.social · 22hUsual gripe. The official forecast output (using @burgwx.bsky.social's excellent polarwx website) - people would be forgiven in taking their eye off the ball as they interpret NHC's landfall strength as a weak Cat 1. Is it difficult to add a landfall point and intensity in all graphical forecasts? 130
Richard Dixon @catinsight.bsky.social · 23hTwo pennies' worth on Isaias - little wonder it's kicking on with favourable environments now a window of opportunity for development has occurred in the Gulf: the sea has been record warm along the path of the developing storm for a couple of weeks or so now. 050
Richard Dixon @catinsight.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I would love to play more with ensemble forecast grib data, but having to download the whole global forecast with all the ensembles for each variable really makes it fairly prohibitive. Unless anyone knows of a live way of subdividing forecast ensembles prior to download? 000
Richard Dixon @catinsight.bsky.social · 08/10/2026It's a veritable Isaiaiaiaias-off on here. You can tell social media has been starved of a live event. 000

Richard Dixon @catinsight.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I've been having a look at the components (although not using MPI, just SST) cumulatively since Jun 1 - the shear has absolutely knackered the Atlantic...(also useful RH low in supply, too - I assume from compensatory descent from the E Pac convection). 110

Richard Dixon @catinsight.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Not sure I need to bother saying any more but one last word on 2026 v 1976: looking at the average daily Central England Temperature difference between the two years as a whole, we've settled on 1976 being about 2c warmer, as it stands near the end of September. 000
Richard Dixon @catinsight.bsky.social · 24/09/2026An E Pac / N Atl view of how conditions for tropical cyclogenesis this summer compare to prior 30 yrs: El Nino footprint very much there. Shear has destroyed the MDR, but that slice of the E Pac close to Hawaii has been ripe: hence two, soon to be an unprecedented (?) three storms in the vicinity. 021
Richard Dixon @catinsight.bsky.social · 22/09/2026A good read. As someone abhors flying I often interrail into Europe. If you're using ONI as it gives more dramatic numbers for the clicks - heck, just use RONI and quote your anomalies in Fahrenheit. 010
