‘Prairie Peace’ is a spinosissima , or Scots rose, which makes it very hardy, disease resistant, and needing little care aside from good drainage. In fact, once established, they can tackle very challenging conditions in poor soil.
In the early 19th century, Scots roses came to prominence, their finally toothed leaves, lending and almost lace-like elegance and refinement to the garden. Even Queen Victoria planted them at Balmoral. When they became more widely available, fashions shifted towards new, more reliably repeat bloomers. However, these roses never lost their quiet, enduring charm. Here at the farm, in our PNW climate, they are the first to greet spring, opening early, and returning in scattered summer flushes, like echos of that first awakening.
This particular variant,’Prairie Peace’, by Maggie sharp carries its own light. Creamy yellows brushed with pink and orange highlights give each bloom a warm glow, as if caught in golden hour, yet holding that radiance all day long. The effect is soft, glowing, almost luminous against the shrub. Named for its resemblance to the ‘Peace’ rose, it was bred by Erskine in Canada, 1975. He once wrote: “ a rose seedling (Beauty of Leafland) x Hazeldean) has three beautiful pink and yellow double flowers open today. It is about the colour of the peace rose, so I may call it prairie peace “.
A fitting name for a rose that feels both gentle enduring, like the sunlight that filters into dusk.
