I keep forgetting to mention something I liked about the latest Apple keynote: They showed Siri dictation using the Oxford comma. 😀

Here to promote Mur Lafferty's "Lonesome October Club". Write a chapter of a novel each day in October, just like Zelazny did in "A Night in the Lonesome October". Maybe. To sign up, go to Mur's Patreon page (you don't have to be a patron of hers to participate): www.patreon.com/mightymur/po...

I upgraded to an iPad that has FaceID (instead of Touch ID) late last year and the only issue is FaceID needs the device to be farther away from my face than my eyes do. This is fine for a phone; I’m holding it with one hand so I just move it farther away for a second. But it’s a pain with an iPad.

Watching the ‘Context is King’ episode of Star Trek: Discovery with audio description because the regular audio track doesn’t work for some reason. It’s interesting to hear what gets described, and another weird way that accessibility helps everyone.

Even though mornings technically have nothing to do with lunar rovers, it’s somehow a useful mnemonic for me that the kanji for morning 朝 is a combination of the ones for car 車 and moon/month. 月

We’re binging Widow’s Bay and I was excited to notice K Callan in the credits! I don’t typically follow or recognise actors, but I was a big fan of Lois & Clark, so that’s a name I know well.

Our Road Trip from New York City to Seattle
Hey, remember when I shared a video in which I took down my poster wall in Vienna to prepare for moving to the US, and then another one as a summary of the trip to New York City aboard the Queen Mary 2? Well, in case you're wondering how we got from there to where I now live in the Seattle area, I've just finished a summary video of that.

A clip of me commenting on @jococruise.bsky.social about being banned in a school library went up and I thought I'd share. The first 90 seconds are on me, but it's the rest I think is important, where I talk about the real harms book bans inflict on authors who are not like me. youtu.be/ya1ylFb9E_k

I just finished reading one friend’s book series and then read a book by a different friend. Also, depending on the weather, sometimes I wear a hoodie with one friend’s art on it and sometimes I wear a thinner outer top with a different friend’s art on it. I have such cool friends!

Today I finally finished uploading my JoCo cruise footage! About 24 hours, 24 minutes thereof (not counting stuff we couldn’t share). Usually I finish this by May 1, but this year the cruise was later, and I had a job, a commute, and a cutie to watch Star Trek with. youtube.com/playlist?lis...

Yesterday I heard that the Apple Polishing Cloth is actually way better than just a microfibre cloth, and while its extensive compatible devices list does not include glasses, it's really great for cleaning them. So I just ordered one for $19 and Apple will give $10 to the National Park Foundation.

I've had 'use trackpad for dragging' turned on on my Mac since before it was hidden under Accessibility, but I've never needed Drag Lock until recently. It used to let you lift your finger to quickly reposition it in the middle of a drag, without Drag Lock. Now it doesn't. When did that change?

I was just thinking last night that as a teenager, before I had the tools to use, say, databases, I wrote several HyperCard stacks using the ASV data format — that's Apple-separated values, where I'd delimit items with "" (the Apple logo character). 🤣 Very unlikely to clash with the actual data!

One thing that technology has made less intuitive over the years is using public toilets. You need to flush, get water, get soap, and dry your hands, and for each of these steps you have to work out whether you need to touch something, or wave a body part in front of or under something.

🤔 If I had an idea for a talk, I could theme it for #deepDishSwift by mentioning the common practice of putting canned spaghetti on homemade pizzas in NZ, and relating it to spaghetti code. And the pizza theming is the most important thing about a Deep Dish talk, so I’m 80% of the way there…
