MoMA had a fantastic Jacob Lawrence retrospective 7 or 8 years ago focused on his migration series. I recognized a few, but to see 60 panels all together, and see people taking in the history and humanity. Profoundly beautiful.

Fifteen billion miles from home, the farthest machine humans have ever built is still doing science on less memory than a blank Word document and a data recorder that is, quite literally, an 8-track tape. Voyager 1, launched in 1977, is roughly 15.9 billion miles out—closing in on one light-day

This woodblock print, published in 1881 (Meiji 14), is a celebrated masterpiece of animal caricature (chōjū giga) from the landmark illustrated book "Kyōsai’s Manga" (Kyōsai Manga) by the legendary iconoclast and virtuoso artist Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831–1889).
Sprawling across the page with wild, theatrical energy, a boisterous assembly of anthropomorphic frogs (kawazu) capers, spars, and parades in a chaotic celebration of animal caricature. Kyōsai’s fluid, expressive inkwork captures each creature in mid-action: near the top, a swaggering frog wears a broad, torn lotus leaf (hasu no ha) as a sunhat while gripping a reed like a drawn sword between its jaws; nearby, companions leap with splayed webbed feet, brandish lotus seedpods (renshō) as ceremonial staffs, or strut in leaf loincloths with inflated, boastful chests. Along the bottom, a procession unfolds as frogs carry heavy loads on shoulder poles and lean on walking sticks, their spotted skin accented by subtle washes of warm ochre against a cloud-mottled paper ground. The print radiates an exuberant sensory atmosphere: a chorus of resonant croaks reverberating through a damp riverbank, the wet slap of webbed feet on muddy earth, the crisp rustle of withered leaves, and the irreverent clamor of a secret amphibian festival unfolding in the marshland. Published in 1881 (Meiji 14) within the landmark illustrated book Kyōsai’s Manga (Kyōsai Manga), this woodblock print stands as a tour de force of chōjū-giga (frolicking animal caricatures) and kyōga ("crazy pictures") by the iconoclastic virtuoso Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831–1889). Trained in both the classical Kanō school and the dynamic ukiyo-e tradition under Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Kyōsai possessed unmatched draftsmanship and satirical wit. Inheriting a long lineage traced back to the famous 12th-century Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga scrolls, Kyōsai deployed anthropomorphic frogs as comic surrogates to lampoon human vanity, samurai bravado, government bureaucracy, and the rapid social shifts of Meiji-era Japan.

Vertical orientation twilight landscape photograph. A waxing gibbous moon hangs high in a sky that transitions from deep blue at the top to soft pink and gold near the horizon, with thin bands of cloud crossing the frame. A single bird is visible in flight low in the sky. Along the bottom edge, a dark silhouetted treeline and hillside fence run horizontally across the frame, backlit by the warm glow of dusk. Optimized for moonrise landscape photography, twilight silhouette scenes, and rural dusk sky documentation.
