Weather Report: quiet. Utterly still. Some light rain earlier. A sunset dusk-into-dark walk. Testing my nerve in a ‘new’ place after dark. Hares up close, & carouselled by a herd of fallow deer, so close I could smell their warm, animal scent. Bats abroad. Emotional Weather: tranquil, inquiring.

All things pass, both bad and good; but they are not gone, in equal measure. The perfect, stands outside time; while imperfection, perishes with its age. Heed the wise, that good is perfection; and there is no bad, but corrupt good. #sijo

Excited to say I am published in Issue 37 of Drifting Sands: Haibun and Tanka Prose. Thank you, guest editor Neena Singh drifting-sands-haibun.org. Thanks also to @thepeternewton.bsky.social, for great revision advice.
The picture is the full text of the haibun below:

Fledging

The hospice nurse came on shift at 6:00 AM, made sure the patient's diaper was dry, checked her pulse, listened to her breathing. Her husband stood and stretched slowly, waiting for the nurse to advise him to get some sleep, or to tell him what he was half expecting to hear.

She said it softly: "It won't be long now."
"I, uh, know it's not your job... but could you get me some coffee? Jar's on the counter?"
The nurse smiled, "Just a little milk, right? I'll make a cup for myself too."

He sat down again, taking his wife's left hand in his right, covering his eyes with his left. It's so stupid, he thought, that I'm still embarrassed to have someone watch me cry.

The woman on the bed could not feel her hand in his.

. . . she is trying to remember something, a dream she had when she was small . . .
ah . . . the woman with blue feathers . . . she sits then stands easily, raises her arms
to take flight, smiling fondly at his bald head far below

leaf-dappled
dawnlight on the wall . . .
the shape of wings

I love fall so much. I've lived in Vermont my whole life and foliage season still seems like such a completely bonkers and beautiful thing to happen every year. It never gets old. 🍂
Photo of a pile of leaves on vibrant dark green moss. I collected lots of fallen leaves of different colors from different plants and trees and arranged them in an egg-shaped gradient going from green at the top to yellow and then orange and then red to darkest reds at the bottom.

Little grows, in barren soil; while in rich dirt, forests flourish. How much we praise, the towering trees; how little we note, the land that rears them. Deep wisdom, thrives in a fertile mind; you must supply all, but the seed. #sijo

To stand inside a stone circle is to be enfolded by the Long Neolithic. To stand inside a stone circle is also to be enfolded by folklore and a sense of awe. Archaeology is a telling of stories, we do not pretend that our stories are the only ones that matter. – Dr. K. Brophy #StandingStoneSunday

reflecting sunset: a giant cloud of orange 🍊 sherbet Not a #haiku for the ages, or even next week, but sometimes I can only describe what I see, silly metaphor and all.
A large fluffy pale orange cumulous cloud hugs the horizon. A one story house below, and a palm tree and pine in black twilight silhouette on the left.
