Fascinating world of ancient #glass: A Roman glass model of a #boat, dating 2nd c. AD. It was found in St. Aldegund in a 4th-century woman's grave. Six of such boats are known. We don't know their function: Were they used as women's urinals, as components of water clocks and sundials, as...🧵1/2 🏺

Our dear dear friend Haley at @friendsofbear.bsky.social has a very sick, sweet geriatric kitty who is in the hospital dealing with some stuff. She posted on her IG that all she’d like for her birthday today is some donations for his care: linktr.ee/friendsofbear

An orange tabby cat who is a bit old and scrungly sleeping inside a cubby bed.

An old orange tabby cat who is a bit disheveled and scrungly, looking quite under the weather with an IV catheter in one leg and a kind hand scritching his cheek gently.

friendsofbearcatrescue one of my favorite little FoB sanctuary buddies Mr. Peaches is currently in the hospital
no pressure but it's my birthday today
and I would love nothing more than if you could donate toward his hospital bill so we can give him the best chance
our donation links are in our bio!
Peaches came to us at the end of May after 13 hard years on the street. His time outside definitely showed, he was in horrendous shape and weighed 5
Ibs of mostly fleas. Since then, we have been managing his various conditions. He's dealt with anemia, congestion, gastric ulcers, kidney disease, horrible dental disease... the list goes on. We've been slowly chipping away at these issues and he was actually starting to feel pretty good! A couple weeks ago, he started backsliding and I've been trying to figure him out. This weekend, it became clear he was declining and what I was doing at home wasn't enough, so I had to admit him to the hospital.
Peaches is dealing with an infection, dehydration, another gastric ulcer, pretty awful congestion and a mild hit to his kidneys. Thankfully, after 24 hrs of fluids, he's showing improvement. Through all of this, he continues to have the loudest purr and best headbutts for everyone who helps him
I feel hopeful that we can get Peaches back on track and give him more time to feel loved and cherished, something he missed out on for his first 13 years of life. If you're able to pitch in $1 or $5 toward his care, we would all appreciate it more than you know.
Everyone who has met this little guy knows how special he is and how much he wants to stick around
thank you all as always for the ongoing support for these gross cats, they are my heart and soul and your donations and kind comments mean the world to me

Duckling photobomb. Photo from my collection, no date/info.

Black-and-white photo of a dirt yard, surrounded by wire fence with a shed or coop visible in the background. There is a beautiful duck, surrounded by her ducklings standing in the yard, but passing in front of her is a slightly blurry calico cat, who obviously dashed through the scene while the photo was being taken.

Saying someone's art is "so good I thought it was AI" is not a compliment. I'm seeing more of these type of comments on other folks art. I just read one that said "my brain tells me it's AI but my heart knows it's not". The fuck are you on about? Consider not posting every thought you have.

We frequently speak of the world's first synthetic pigment, Egyptian blue, but a very similar all-natural and highly durable blue pigment was being utilized by the Maya in Mexico: Maya blue. Here used appropriately on a ceramic crocodile whistle with rattle. #MetMuseum🏺 1/ 📸 me

This zoomorphic ceramic figure has been hand-modeled into the form of a crocodile. It functions as both a whistle—air holes appear in front of the animal's rear legs on its underside, and an air vent is found underneath its neck—and a rattle—clay pellets are inside the front half of the figure.

The crocodile has raised eyelids projecting from atop its long, upturned snout with round nostrils and three triangular teeth projecting horizontally from each side of his mouth. Flopped and flaring dog-like ears project from back sides of the head behind the eyes. Its short, squat legs splay out from the underside of the body. On the two forelegs, toes have been delineated through notched and incised detail. The long, flat, wide tail features triangular notches replicating the zigzag pattern of a crocodilian tail.

Painted all over - saved some patchy spots - with a still incredibly vibrant Maya blue pigment, which is a bright turquoise hue.

700-800 CE, Mexico.
