every billionaire & tech mogul, they all want to be adored & celebrated without doing the things Dolly did with a fraction of the power & money. What she had, she gave away. I'm sure she was comfortable (& that's good!). But she just relentlessly helped. It's not that difficult. Love. Care. Help. 💚🌸

After some time in publishing, you begin to see that there is pretty much nothing the author can do to move the needle. Social media no longer sells books, at least when instigated by the author; it has to get viral from an outside source, and even there, lightning does not strike twice.

My biggest frustration with writing is that quite often, the SWOOP that takes a book from midlist to BIG DEAL is pure luck, and I personally can't do anything to make it happen. Publishing is not a meritocracy. It's skill + time + luck, and all you can do is be in position for possible liftoff.

What I don't get is why publishers are acting so reflexively. Why not conduct your own investigation? Why not ask to look at previous drafts and compare them? Why rely on a fire extinguisher sold by an arsonist?

This is what writing *is.* What the reader experiences in just the output of all this backend structure that authors create. If your characters are randomly generated by an algorithm and not a product of your thinking, then you’re not actually writing.

Living in Canada there are so many of these trucks and I'm sick of them. I'm reasonably tall and they're up to my chest, a kid stands no chance. Drivers also seem to feel invincible in them as they're the ones most reckless I find. Although I guess blind spots don't help.

On the one hand, baffling to place blame for falling author incomes on libraries (and there are ways you can offset this anyway), on the other, given the state of the world and how libraries are an island of good in a sea of trash, totally on brand.

this is also a crisis in publishing as the midlist collapses and publishers chase fanfic or tiktok breakouts and then throw them to the wolves with little support. no one has the time or budget to grow authors while they learn their craft and become better writers, and that was BEFORE AI bullshit.

Uninterested in leading a pile-on but no, AI does not “have access” to everything ever published. Not archival material, obviously, but not secondary material either. Nor across times nor languages. AI is not human knowledge personified. It’s exactly not that, in fact. It’s not even a search engine.

Also, if I'm being cynical (always), this is less about kids and their reading likes/dislikes and more a publisher able to repackage something as shiny and new and, if it's old, not have to pay an author for it.
