Right, so. I’m with Ketan here: the theft I refer to with AI isn’t so much training data (which sucks) but the ways that it enables an entire culture of permissible theft maintained by folks who don’t see the harm in what they do.

the speed at which human beings move from "this terrible thing exists" to "everyone just has to learn to live with it" is truly alarming and illuminating. Immediately moving to compliance. Watching this in real time is incredible.

Since PTSD is being invoked to excuse any and all abuse and misconduct, let us acknowledge where it is most common. .... From my book Recollections of My Nonexistence.
The former Marine David J. Morris, author of a book on post-
traumatic stress disorder, notes that the disorder is far more com-
mon and far more rarely addressed among rape survivors than
combat veterans. He wrote me, “The science on the subject is pretty
clear: according to the New England Journal of Medicine, rape is about
four times more likely to result in diagnosable PTSD than combat.
Think about that for a moment— being raped is four times more psy-
chologically disturbing than going off to a war and being shot at and
blown up. And because there are currently no enduring cultural nar-
ratives that allow women to look upon their survival as somehow he-
roic or honorable, the potential for enduring damage is even greater.”

ARCHAEOLOGY

The older we get, the deeper we dig into our childhoods, Hoping to find the radiant cell
That washed us, and caused our lives to glow in the dark like clock hands
Endlessly turning toward the future,
Tomorrow, day after tomorrow, the day after that, all golden, all in good time.

Hiwassee Dam, North Carolina

Still 1942,
Still campfire smoke in both our eyes, my brother and I
Gaze far out at the lake in sunflame
Expecting our father at any moment, like Charon, to appear
Back out of the light from the other side,
low-gunwaled and loaded down with our slippery dreams.

Other incidents flicker like foxfire in the black
Isolate distance of memory,
cross-eyed,
horizon-haired.

Which one, is it one, is it any one that cleans us, clears us,
That relimbs our lives to a shining?

One month without rain, two months third month of the new year, Afternoon breeze-rustle dry in the dry needles of hemlock and pine.
I can't get down deep enough.
Sunlight flaps its enormous wings and lifts off from the back yard,
The wind rattles its raw throat, but I still can't go deep enough.
