Du Bois on what these assholes were really like
The Southern planter suffered, not simply for his eco- nomic mistakess-the psychological effect of slavery upon him was fatal. The mere fact that a man could be, under the law, the actual master of the mind and body of human beings had to have disastrous effects. It tended to inflate the ego of most planters beyond all reason; they became arrogant, strutting, quarrelsome kinglets; they issued commands; they made laws; they shouted their orders; they expected deference and self-abasement; they were choleric and easily insulted. Their "honor" be- came a vast and awful thing, requiring wide and insist- ent deference. Such of them as were inherently weak and inefficient were all the more easily angered, jealous and resentful; while the few who were superior, physically or mentally, conceived no bounds to their power and per- sonal prestige. As the world had long learned, nothing is so calculated to ruin human nature as absolute power
over human beings.

Here's a companion piece I wrote explicating the archive undergirding my research. It centers a remarkable woman, Priscilla, and her ill-fated effort to manifest a fairer world for her daughter. Most enslaved people never had their day in court, but that does not mean they lacked legal knowledge.

Though they don't seem to be talking about it publicly, it's worth screaming from the rooftops that university presses have also lost NEH grants. NEH has a program to fund creating OA editions of books born of NEH funded research. Publishers apply directly for those grants, not scholars.

DOGE has now turned its sights on a small agency that provides support for community programs in every state. The National Endowment for the Humanities, which funds museums, historic sites, libraries, educators and media outlets across the country, has been told to slash staff by 70-80 percent.🧵

I just got confirmation that National History Day, a program that does more to ignite K-12 students' love of history, learning, and yes, even the United States than anything else I've ever seen, had all its funding cut yesterday by the DOGE-axe at the NEH - including for this year's ongoing contest.

If you’ve ever sat on an NEH review panel (as many of us have), you know how difficult it is to win a grant. It’s an incredibly exacting process, with way too many excellent projects competing for funding. Awardees are scrutinized from every direction, with more rigor than DOGE can even imagine.

I've said it before but it bears repeating: people need to figure out right now what they're willing to do to protect anyone targeted by ICE, CBP, etc in this situation and prepare accordingly. their strategies absolutely break down if people won't look the other way, avoid confrontation, etc

UPDATE on Mahmoud Khalil from his lawyers and his wife: "Today I spoke to Mahmoud and he is healthy and his spirits are undaunted by his predicament." (Legal team now includes ACLU, CCR.)
For full alt text, follow pastebin link in next post. Partial text:

Amy E. Greer, attorney for Mahmoud Khalil provided the following update this evening:

First, importantly, today I spoke to Mahmoud and he is healthy and his spirits are undaunted by his predicament. He also greatly appreciates, and, typically for him, is moved by the extraordinarily broad and steadfast support he has received from a variety of communities that understand what is at stake. He is in ICE custody in Louisiana, and arrangements have been made for local attorneys to visit him today and tomorrow.

The remarks by government officials, including the President, on social media only confirm the purpose – and illegality – of Mahmoud's detention. He was chosen as an example to stifle entirely lawful dissent in violation of the First Amendment. While tomorrow or thereafter the government may cite the law or process, that toothpaste is out of the tube and irreversibly so. The government’s objective is as transparent as it is unlawful, and our role as Mahmoud’s lawyers is to ensure it does not prevail.

Today Mahmoud's legal team, which includes Kyle Barron, CLEAR, the Center for Constitutional Rights, the American Civil Liberties Union, and Amy Greer filed a motion to compel in federal court in the Southern District of New York, as part of the habeas corpus petition filed on his behalf over the weekend, seeking an order requiring the government to return to New York for any immigration proceedings.
