SHE DREAMT OF A CITY OF WOMEN

A man with good humor was at the center of a company of sol- diers tasked to protect the city of men. He could down a bottle of the finest bourbon in three swallows and still hit a bullseye with his bow. At home in the service, he became the leader among the men, their champion, their spokesman. On a fair day with a fair wind, his regiment came upon a crying woman near the border, distressed and in disarray. The rank and file sneered and elbowed one another, thinking only how to use her. But, having some scruples left, the leader would not allow it. Instead he bid them stay back as he approached her. He knelt and asked what she was doing there. Checking a rising sob, she pointed to a twisted mass of wood on the roadside. Upon closer inspection, the man saw a pretty little chest of drawers, paint- ed with colorful flowers and fixed with brass knobs, crushed to splinters by some unseen force. He had never seen such a delicate thing, and forAXIOM #3
