I’m disabled and an assault survivor and I see allegations of fakery for both the same way. The public attention, stigma, and violence that follow us around is far more intense than any benefit one might illicitly gain. Nobody would ever invite this level of scrutiny and judgment without cause.

My alma mater did it in 2001 because of a major hazing incident, and I genuinely think that was the best decision they ever made. Schools will still have problems, sure, but there is significantly less harm when sororities and fraternities are not around.

The impact of slavery was twofold. Obviously when people are suffering from forced labor and physical abuse and inhumane living conditions, disease and injury are much likelier. Things like “being too sick to move” became proof to enslavers that slaves were inherently lazy.

The biggest change in public perception came at the hands of our greatest evils. Smallpox given to native Americans and the effects of chattel slavery. Suddenly because the white people might survive smallpox (might, still deadly), it felling native people was used as a sign they were “unclean”.

Lots of cultures believe(d) that disabled people are sacred or to be honored. Even “western” civilizations had respect. Was reminded that in the 1300s, it was believed that sick/poor people were considered closer to God. The plague changed that perception.
