The dialectical progeny of Karl Marx and Antonio Gramsci, I reject common sense for good sense. We live in a time of monsters, as the old gives way to the new. Don't be afraid of the monsters.

Ebert used the freikorps to break the KPD. Now, suppose a Dem or a DS chooses to join a picket line or demonstration alongside revolutionaries. They probably won't be pushed left. I'll still debate with them all day.

Are you surprised that the man who fought in the POUM in Spain, watched the Stalinist CP betray the Republic, wrote Animal Farm and 1984 would not do everything possible to expose Stalinists?

Lenin and Trotsky both saw the Brest-Litovsk debate as a tactical choice to preserve the revolution, not a test of faith. The dispute wasn't over principle, but timing and reading the international working class. Calling it a betrayal misunderstands how real Bolshevik democracy actually worked.

Many sects degenerated into purity tests, but Trotsky’s core insight was real: victory required spreading the revolution internationally, not building "socialism in one country." The problem was Stalinism crushing workers' democracy, not Marxism itself—sectarianism stems from isolation, not theory.

Carlos Gramsci @carlosgramsci.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Many abandoned Marxism, but Trotskyism didn't yield neoconservatism. Max Shachtman's camp drifted right through Cold War reformism, while neocons like Irving Kristol were ex-Trotskyists who explicitly rejected Marxism for imperialism and free-market capitalism. It was betrayal, not continuation.

Historical materialism and dialectics work through contradictions: Stalin’s bureaucracy set out to build "socialism in one country," but its headlong drive for forced industrialization actually laid the foundation for state capitalism instead. Same with the Chinese CP.

As for Putin making oligarchs subservient to the state, that's another misrepresentation. The oligarchs are subservient to Putin. He made them and he breaks them if they show any disloyalty to him.

I listened to the whole apologia. "Sanctions since 2022" and "left the neo-liberalism world order" are stated completely out of the context of Russia's invasion on Ukraine. Even after that, Russia was still trading energy resources with the west until Russia was thrown out.

Electing representatives who manage things "for" workers isn't worker control but representative bureaucracy. Real workers' control means direct power through recallable councils running workplaces daily. Without continuous democratic power from below, there is no socialism.

Carlos Gramsci @carlosgramsci.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
You miss Marx’s core point: state ownership alone isn't socialism. If the state controls the MOP but workers don't democratically control the state, it’s not a "workers' state"—it’s state capitalism. Genuine socialism requires direct worker control from below, not bureaucratic rule.

Liberalism is one of the tools the boss class use to distract from their rapacious exploitation of workers' labour. So is religion, so is conservatism, so is nationalism, so is sexism, so are culture wars, so is media; so is everything existing as a result of the bourgeoisie's cultural hegemony.

State Capitalism?! Let's go down that road. Okay, so now Putin stands in the M-L tradition? He is bringing the oligarchs to heel? I suppose the next step is to claim he's a communist and the invasion of Ukraine was his attempt to kick start an international socialist revolution.

Stalinist distortion. Hungary 1956 was a genuine working-class revolution driven by spontaneous workers' councils, not a CIA counterrevolution. Russian tanks crushed socialist self-management.

It's corporate welfare and massive government subsidies. It's not rigging the system Secretary Reich; it is the system. What would be a fair amount of corporate exploitation of workers, in your opinion? The "system" (capitalism) needs to be changed.

Trotsky rejected state capitalism in 1936 seeing Stalinism as temporary. But historical materialism shows the USSR was bound to global capital accumulation and arms racing. The bureaucracy became a collective capitalist class; state capitalism was the underlying reality Trotsky missed. Only human.

Carlos Gramsci @carlosgramsci.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Trotsky’s method was dynamic, but treating Stalinism as a temporary aberration missed reality. The ruling bureaucracy extracted surplus value and accumulated capital via global arms competition. State capitalism isn't a betrayal of Marxism; it’s applying classical historical materialism.

"If in 1918 the Soc Dems of Germany had employed the power imposed upon them by the workers for a socialist revolution, and not for the rescue of capitalism, it is easy to see on the basis of the Russian experience what unconquerable economic power would be possessed today by a socialist bloc." LT
