I agree, but my point is that a) he can use his transnational connections to limit how much an individual country can hurt him and b) if push comes to shove, he can just move elsewhere, like he did with California when he transferred to Texas.

China has quite a grip on Tesla. The planetary extent of his financial ties became apparent when he bought Twitter. With Starlink he has tech that affects Ukraine's war strategies. Ignoring how connected these power structures are is, in my eyes, missing a key aspect of today's world.

The issue with billionaires like Musk is that their reach exceeds the national boundaries. You need agreements with other countries to exert real pressure. Without it, you risk losing the tax revenue while keeping the power structure mostly intact. It's a tall order, but it's worth the effort.

3/ AI breakthroughs like AlphaFold wouldn’t be possible without decades of work on datasets. e.g., AlphaFold was trained on protein structures from the Protein Data Bank (PDB), which took 50+ years and ~$20 *billion* to create. This is the kind of foundational effort AI needs.

I have tried and failed to make a similar argument for years. Every NSF proposal I submit about SoftEng for robotics gets destroyed because it's understood as mere development. It's much more, making the right tools yields thinking frameworks that become productivity and creativity amplifiers.
