Vote Lib Dem or ‘regret it’ living under a Reform council, Davey tells voters
Party leader says vote for Labour or Greens in closely run seats will result in Reform victory at local elections Voters in the home counties will “regret it for a long time” if they do not back the Liberal Democrats and wake up to a Reform-led council, Ed Davey has said. The Lib Dems leader has identified five councils – East Surrey, West Surrey, Hampshire, West Sussex and Huntingdonshire – where his party could win overall control, as well as swathes of the former “blue wall” where Davey said it was a “straight fight” between his party and Reform at the English local elections. West Surrey Elections: Daily Telegraph poll shows only the Lib Dems can beat the Conservatives and Reform in West Surrey on 7 May. Labour and the Greens are too far behind. Vote for two Lib Dem candidates in your division to ensure the first West Surrey Unitary is led by a progressive party.

There's not been much coverage, anywhere, of the insane debt crisis facing the new West Surrey Council, apart from my facebook post. So, to reiterate, this new council will start out in its first year spending *40%* of its budget simply on servicing debt. www.facebook.com/georgepotter...
Table showing the gross debt financing costs for the existing councils due to make up the future West Surrey and East Surrey councils. The table shows that West Surrey will be spending £320 million, or 39.9%, of its 2026/27 net revenue budget, on debt financing costs.

East Surrey will be spending £52 million, or 7.6%, on debt financing costs.

Lib Dem Leader, Cllr @pauldfollows.bsky.social statement in image below: #Surrey #SurreyCountyCouncil #LocalElections #LocalGovernment #ElectionsCancelled #CancelledElections 2/2
LOCAL ELECTIONS CANCELLED
SURREY CONSERVATIVE REQUEST TO CANCEL LOCAL ELECTIONS THIS YEAR HAS BEEN GRANTED BY THE GOVERNMENT
‼️ After many delays and so many rumours coming from all sides, I am dismayed to inform residents that the Surrey County Council Elections, scheduled for May 2025 have been CANCELLED.‼️
➡️ As I have posted previously, the Conservative leadership of the County Council put in a request to cancel the elections and this was opposed by me and my colleagues at every level.
🛑 The government have chosen to grant their request and press ahead with a rushed, unplanned local government re-organisation in Surrey (and several other counties in England).
❇️ There are many questions that will now follow this announcement. I will be asking them. I will be in the room (as the Leader of Waverley) for the discussions and negotiations that come next with the intention of seeking a unitary authority that continues to fully and properly represent the people of Waverley.
❇️ I will report back to residents and councillors as frequently and fully as I am able to during this process.
🛑 I consider this an affront to your democratic rights and a regrettable decision from all of the local Conservatives to pursue this and of the government to grant it.

As Labour government and Conservative County Council plot to take away your vote avoiding damning verdict on...

Financial chaos - Despite a record number of council tax increases, the Conservatives have managed to build up over £2 Billion of debt at County Hall. They now only have 14 days of reserves and are on the verge of bankruptcy.

Crumbling roads - Roads are covered in potholes and pavements across Surrey are broken. the Conservative County Council have allowed our roads to crumble despite asking residents for inflation busting council tax rises.

Neglected children - Children have been let down by a Tory Council who has neglected Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and failed to protect and keep safe the most vulnerable. The Tories have been forced to apologise over their failures.

Letters to the Leader of Surrey County Council, Cllr Tim Oliver and Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner. This followed a full council debate about the English Devolution White Paper where the Conservatives decided to hold firm in their desire to cancel the Surrey County Council elections this May.
To

The Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Housing, Communities and Local Government-Rt Hon Angela Rayner MP,

The Minister of State for Local Government & English Devolution, Hon. Jim McMahon MP.

Re: English Devolution White Paper and Surrey County Council Proposals

The White Paper issued by your department before Christmas offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reform Local Government and establish an enduring and sustainable system that works for residents, our distinct local communities, and the national government.

We recognise the clear intention and direction of the government, and we acknowledge the problems within local government, both locally and nationally, and understand the need for urgent and meaningful change.

However, we cannot support the postponement of the Surrey County Council elections scheduled for May 2025. Surrey County Council has not developed plans that address the specific and complex issues within Local Government in Surrey, including the significant funding and debt matters, or your aspirations for genuinely strategic-level authorities in England. Nor does it have broader support from Surrey Districts and Boroughs or any democratic mandate to pursue such plans unilaterally.

We do not believe that a sustainable and enduring Local Government settlement can or should be made based on present concerns and should reflect the distinct local character of our communities. As of the submission of this letter, over 2500 residents of Surrey have signed a petition opposing the plans of Surrey County Council and asking that elections be held as planned.

We believe that other options, more compatible with the White Paper's aims, and more viable for local and strategic authority possibilities, should also be considered. To date, Surrey County Council has not meaningfully engaged with or had conversations with the District and Borough Councils, other than a meeting due to take place on January 7th.We want to work with you the District and Borough Leaders of Surrey, and the Surrey County Council, to agree on a sustainable future for Surrey. Any changes must be carefully considered, transparent, and inclusive, and we must ensure that residents and businesses within our county are fully engaged in shaping Surrey's future governance

This cannot happen within the timescales currently stated, and we ask that you allow Surrey as a county more time to thoroughly consider these matters, by continuing with elections as planned, and thereby giving those elected a mandate to bring forward proposals.

Yours sincerely.

Councillor Paul Follows

Leader, Waverley Borough Council and Liberal Democrat Group

Councillor Peter Clark Group Leader. Farnham Residents

Councillor Janet Crowe, Group Leader, Labour

Councillor Steve Williams Group Leader, Green PartyDate: 8 January 2025To:Leader of Surrey County Council Cllr Tim Oliver CC. Chief Executive of Surrey County Council, Terence HerbertRe: English Devolution White Paper and Surrey County Council ProposalsDear Tim,Following notification of Surrey County Council's proposals regarding Local Government re-organisation, the Executive of Waverley, Borough Council (and the undersigned political group leaders of our local authority) wish to relay our objection to your proposals and strongly associate ourselves with the comments of the Surrey Leaders Group in their letter of 7th January 2025We cannot support the proposed postponement of local elections scheduled for May 2025. Surrey County Council has not developed plans that address the specific and complex issues within Local Government in Surrey, including the significant funding and debt matters, and there has been no articulation of the benefits of being in this first tranche of re-organisation. There has also been no indication of how the government will address the long-term, structural funding issues in Adult Social Care, Children's Services, SEND provision and Highways in the county. We do not believe that a sustainable and enduring Local Government settlement within our county can or should be made based on present concerns and should reflect the distinct local character of our communities.Your proposals were produced in a matter of days, over the Christmas and New Year period, without consultation with the Surrey Districts and Boroughs until 7th January 2025 and without any democratic mandate to pursue such plansAs of the submission of this letter, over 2500 Surrey residents have signed a petition opposing Surrey County Council's plans and asking that elections be held as planned. We believe that other options, more compatible with the White Paper's aims and more viable for local and strategic authority possibilities should also be considered. We want to work with you, the other District and Borough Leaders of Surrey, and the government to agree on a sustainable future for Surrey Any changes must be carefully considered, transparent, and inclusive, and we must ensure that residents and businesses within our county are fully engaged in shaping Surrey's future governance.

Ultimately, Surrey County Council has a choice and is not required by the government to take early action or postpone elections Thorough consideration and proper consultation cannot happen within the timeframes currently stated, and we ask that you follow the example of your Conservative colleagues in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamsben, and allow more time to consider these matters thoroughly. By continuing with elections as planned, you will thereby give those elected a mandate to bring forward proposals.

Yours sincerely,

These findings show just how much carers contribute to our society, but also how hard it is for carers to get the support they need. The government now needs to fully recognise the critical role carers play and end the years of neglect under the Conservatives.
