Control without ownership? Will Hutton & Andy Haldane have drawn up a plan to fix the UK water industry: introduce guardrails, but keep it in private hands. Chris Hayes explains why this is ill-founded – and why only public ownership can fix a broken system. www.common-wealth.org/publications...

Care Full will be considering what we need to do as priorities now for those whose lives are harder because existing systems don't work for them and how we can really make a National Care Service work for all of us and root out the deep flaws in our existing systems. 6/8

It was like the prime minister was listening in and cribbing for his speech! We stand on an interesting precipice, with a National Care Service being offered as a manifesto promise for the next election - there is hope for better in the future but that is further down the road. 5/8

The conversation touched on many of the subjects that Care Full speaks about regularly: wealth extraction, care as a social justice issue, work and care and its interconnection, moving to ambitious visions for care in the future rather than "fixing" the inadequate current system. 4/8

Our panel: From Fixes to Foundations connected our care solidarity work with partners & politicians. It's often a challenge getting people to think about care in a broad sense, connected to all parts of our lives, economy & our society more broadly it was wonderful to see this in our panel. 2/8

🧵Burnham's choice of the Farm's Altogether Now for his speech may have showed his age (and mine - this is Ruth), but it also resonated with Care Full's first ever panel at a party conference.1/8

Anyone who has waded through the social care system for themselves or a loved one will know how meaningful this speech is. It will be a huge challenge - and undoubtedly not be perfect - but the pay-off could be genuinely lifechanging for so many.

If you're disabled, an unpaid carer, you're more likely to live in poverty, have poor health, not have access to paid work, live in poorer housing. Let's stop talking about the cost and start saying it's an investment same as education & the NHS. Care is for us all. An investment in our lives.
121
Care Full @carefull.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
If we ask ourselves why we have to recognise it's rooted in sexism, ableism and ageism. But, if we park for one minute that care is vital to us all, affects all our lives and instead look at the hard numbers. Ignoring care, seeing it as a burden, the "duty" of families costs us all a lot more.

Care Full @carefull.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
It's weird isn't it? When we talk about social care, the first question we get asked is; but who will pay for it? How much will it cost the tax payer? We have universal health and universal education yet for some reason we don't see the value in universal care. 1/4

We were delighted the Guardian featured our letter in response to Paul Sagar's piece on social care. We agree we need to think radically about social care, but unless we address the devaluing & undervaluing of care by our economy. We won't create equity in society.

As we begin big conversations about social care, and the question about how we fund it is raised. Remember, that there is money out there - it's just in the wrong places.

A wealth tax is common sense, not rocket science. Of course people - including millionaires like us - overwhelmingly support it. £24bn a year for our country could be raised with a tiny 2% tax on wealth over £10m. It's time to #TaxTheSuperRich

It’s worth pausing on the scale of Burnham’s social care pitch. This could be the biggest reform to health in England in a generation. A universal care system - effectively a second NHS - would be revolutionary. Just free personal care would be lifechanging for older and disabled people.

Look past the bigamy bit, and focus in on the idea that a man could earn enough money to financially support two families! At the same time tax was higher than it is now. Whilst in 2026 a household with two adults can often not earn enough to live well, let alone support a second family.

What if we championed and grew the foundations of our welfare state rather than continued to minimise them? It feels against the grain, but it's an ambition that we think deserves more support if we're ever to truly build a caring society.
