Designated 'Historic Asset'! We always suspected it, but now it's Cadw official! 🙏🍾 Our Arts & Social Studies Library received it's Grade II listing on Wednesday last week, noted as a key example of a twentieth century university library in Wales.
Cadw Grade II listed.

Arts & Social Studies Library. Date of designation: 24 June 2026.A key example of a twentieth century university library in Wales, designed by Harry Faulkner-Brown an influential figure in library design and demonstrating his ‘ten commandments’ with clarity and finesse in its Brutalist design. An important aspect of Wales’ cultural history as an important university library and the last major building of the postwar expansion in tertiary education in Cardiff commenced before the economic shocks of the 1970s.

Lovely buildings, very reminiscent of our own Brambell Building here at Bangor University which was recently Grade II listed. They call it Brutalist Architecture, but I think they're beautiful.

We don't like to brag about this (too often) but in 1976 our brand new Arts and Social Studies Library was awarded 'commended' status at the Concrete Society Awards, or rather our architects FaulknerBrowns were for putting us up! (1/4)

Dydyn ni ddim yn hoffi tynnu sylw at hyn (yn rhy aml) ond ym 1976 dyfarnwyd statws canmoliaeth i adeilad newydd sbon Llyfrgell y Celfyddydau ac Astudiaethau Cymdeithasol yng ngwobrau'r Gymdeithas Goncrit, neu'n hytrach y penseiri, FaulknerBrowns, gafodd y ganmoliaeth. (1/4)

Pan fydd casgliadau yn cael eu hadnewyddu - peidiwch â chynhyrfu, mae'n broses naturiol yn y llyfrgell i wneud yn siŵr bod ein stoc yn gyfredol - mae'r hen gopïau'n cael eu pacio a'u rhoi i dîm AnyBook, sydd yna’n catalogio, cadw a gwerthu pob eitem (1/2)

One for the library nerds. Everyone else, look away! When our collections are weeded - don't panic, it's a natural library process to keep our stocks fresh - they get packed and transported to the team at AnyBook who then catalogue, store and sell each item (1/2)
