Almost every single student who has found me this week wants to talk about AI. A couple reflections. One student has taken three AI courses in philosophy, health sciences and comm. They’re basically the same class. As it turns out, it doesn’t take a lot of classes to “learn” ai.

There was a similar trend happening in rhetoric/composition where big tech and uncritical adoption seemed to take over, but a lot of folks began organizing, pushing back, and refusing. I think it has allowed for a lot more diverse perspectives and approaches. I hope that happens in DH.

Imagine the conversation we could have about this travesty if NCTE didn’t require Cs officers and executive committee members to sign confidentiality agreements. Folks should also ask NCTE about how and whether their lucrative grant/partnership with Google was part of what Cs “culture” threatened.

Regional networks and support are SO important, but following CCCC‘s dechartering, I believe we need national and international organizing to maintain our discipline and combat the intensifying authoritarianism that brought down our org in the first place.

It often feels like institutions of higher ed are slow to make progressive change but very quick to go forward with bad & harmful changes. Anyway, here’s the sticker I was buying at an art fair when the news dropped that NCTE voted to de-charter CCCC

Statement from the CFSHRC's Executive Board #SaveCCCC 💔
The Executive Board of the Coalition of Feminist Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition has been watching the social media posts regarding NCTE’s intention to dissolve the Conference on College Composition and Communication into their College Section. We too have found this news incredibly disheartening. We urge NCTE to take the time to hear from Cs leadership and our larger scholarly community before they make any decisions regarding the future of Cs.

While we await official statements and clarity from leadership of both NCTE and Cs, we wanted to express our appreciation for the immense impact Cs has had on the formation, growth, and sustainability of our field for over three quarters of a century.

During this painful time, we see the deep care we have for our work and the endless generosity of time, talent, and expertise that so many in our community have donated to Cs and to us all over the years. We deeply appreciate the executive board and Cs leadership for their work during this difficult time. Any organization is made up of people, and we will persist and thrive.
It is our hope that the Coalition of Feminist Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition can be a place to gather, process, and support our colleagues.
In solidarity,
Coalition of Feminist Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition

NCTE has just summarily killed a 77-year-old organization that has shaped how writing is understood, taught, and learned, in higher education in particular. No member involvement. No transparency. No process to speak of. With friends and fellow educators like these, I guess who needs enemies.

My problem is the framing that it’s obvious of course fanfic and romantasy authors will use genAI, like AI generated work is similar to writing/reading fanfiction. Which is what you’re agreeing with. And I think it’s important to understand fanfic outside of this generalization.
120
Cara Marta Messina @caramartamessina.com · 02/07/2026
Yes, you’re right that it’s not always obvious, especially with fanfic. There is some research that has been done where it is pretty obvious though (not this article but others).

Cara Marta Messina @caramartamessina.com · 02/07/2026
I am also a scholar and do scholarship, which I’m pretty sure you know. I have seen way too many times other scholars making arguments about fandoms and fanfiction without 1) fully engaging with fan studies, 2) even being part of the community. So yes. I find it deeply frustrating.

I conducted a survey where more than 1,000 fanfic authors and readers report valuing the human elements of writing and reading fic; they perceived AI as the antithesis of ff. The conclusion of my book argues refusing genAI in fanfic is a liberatory practice. uipress.uiowa.edu/books/critic...

There are millions upon millions of people who write and read fanfic. Yeah, there are ff folks who use AI, but most DO NOT. There is a huge community pushback to AI-generated fics or using AI to help with editing/revising.
140
Cara Marta Messina @caramartamessina.com · 02/07/2026
I know scholars are always so excited excited to “prove” how readers, especially queer and women readers, have no taste (yes, that’s the implication here). The framing of this article and your framing make sweeping generalizations about fanfic writers and readers that are not accurate.

I find it very embarrassing for our field that we've been having to repeat this about "AI" and writing instruction since I was one-year old (from an article by Fred Kemp in a 1987 issue of Writing Center Journal)
You may marvel, and many do, that computers can discover and describe in minute detail these characteristics of a student's paper, but I have a different reaction. Taking my cue from Artificial Intelligence research, Iook for truths about human discourse from what the computer can't do. The fact that a computer can perform the above analyses in ready fashion while being completely locked out of the content of a paper suggests that computer editing, while no doubt useful commercially and in discourse analysis, is not very useful pedagogically. Style-checkers promote a band-aid approach to writing instruction and direct time and attention away from the larger issue: the quality of the student's ideas and the relationship between those ideas and the form of expression she employs."
