In their book, Dr. @carahongwhaley.bsky.social and Dr. @abegoldberg.bsky.social argue that "higher education is itself a central site where democratic capacities are cultivated, weakened, or transformed." Read Dr. Herzog's full review here: bit.ly/4uiUo6k #edusky #academicsky

🗳️ Virginia lawmakers are considering expanding ranked-choice voting in local elections. In this @pilotonline.com op-ed, @carahongwhaley.bsky.social (UVA) supports the effort but urges lawmakers not to lock ranked ballots into just one way of counting them. Learn more. ⤵️

Column: Virginia’s ranked-choice voting plan needs one fix

If Virginia wants ranked ballots that are fair, easy to understand, and trusted by voters, the current bill needs one simple amendment. I break down what that change is and why it matters in today’s Virginia Pilot: www.pilotonline.com/2026/02/24/c...

From 1982-2018, the Republican National Committee was barred from "ballot security measures" because of their record of using state actors to intimidate minority voters. (H/t @rickhasen.bsky.social) www.npr.org/2018/01/09/5...
SHAPIRO: What happened in the early 1980s that led to this consent decree?

HASEN: Well, the Democrats accused the Republican National Committee of engaging in a number of activities which they said was voter suppression in violation of the Voting Rights Act and other civil rights laws. One thing the RNC was accused of was sending armed police officers off duty to polling places to patrol the polling places in minority areas.

People Want Better Choices: What Our New Survey Says About Parties, Leaders, and Election Reform
A new national survey finds that many voters feel they are choosing the “lesser of two evils” at the ballot box and would like to see better candidates and fairer ways to elect them.

The district court's opinion partially & temporarily blocking key parts of Trump's executive order on elections is careful, persuasive, and seems very likely to be upheld on appeal, even before this Supreme Court. The key point: Presidents don't have authority to regulate federal elections:
But the defendants’ threshold arguments falter with respect to the plaintiffs’ challenges to Sections 2(a) and 2(d). And on the merits, the plaintiffs are substantially likely to prevail: Our Constitution entrusts Congress and the States—not the President—with the authority to regulate federal elections. Consistent with that allocation of power, Congress is currently debating legislation that would effect many of the changes the President purports to order. See Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, H.R. 22, 119th Cong. (2025). And no statutory delegation of authority to the Executive Branch permits the President to short-circuit Congress’s deliberative process by executive order.

NEW: Meta has quietly dismantled the system that prevented misinformation from spreading in the United States. Machine-learning classifiers that once identified viral hoaxes and limited their reach have now been switched off, Platformer has learned www.platformer.news/meta-ends-mi...
Behind the scenes, the company was also quietly dismantling a system to prevent the spread of misinformation. When the company announced on Jan. 7 that it would end its fact-checking partnerships, the company also instructed teams responsible for ranking content in the company’s apps to stop penalizing misinformation, according to sources and an internal document obtained by Platformer.

The result is that the sort of viral hoaxes that ran roughshod over the platform during the 2016 US presidential election — “Pope Francis endorses Trump,” Pizzagate, and all the rest — are now just as eligible for free amplification on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads as true stories.

The 2024 election revealed a stark reality: our democracy exists in fragmented worlds. Voters operated in distinct informational ecosystems, shaped by disinformation, dark money, and polarized rhetoric.

A lot of questions about the poll, but why are folks (1) asking people about agreement or disagreement with statements on a 100 point scale, and (2) then dichotomizing that scale, and (3) using the value of 61 rather than 50 to split agree and disagree?
