it's good to see this laid out clearly, but i'm once again going to point to Peter Naur's 1985 essay "Programming as Theory Building"
The present discussion is a contribution to the understanding of what programming is. It suggests that programming properly should be regarded as an activity by which the programmers form or achieve a certain kind of insight, a theory, of the matters at hand. This suggestion is in contrast to what appears to be a more common notion, that programming should be regarded as a production of a program and certain other texts.

I spent a sleepless night trying to account for Christa Pike. Raised Catholic, I trained in medicine; my early career was in humanitarianism. My vocation led me, reluctantly, to the profession of arms. And a deep familiarity with moral friction. Now I have tidy little desk at the war factory.

Two sad facts I have learned over the years: (1) we all know far less than we think we do, and (2) it is so easy to become the things we say we hate. This is why I imperfectly seek the light so much. We must all try to be better.

I usually add undergrads to papers for very little, but usually we have 8-10 authors, and in this case it was just going to be two. The undergrad just did a little data analysis. This undergrad will be on another paper that she is contributing to more substantially.
