A 7 panel comic by the artist. First panel: The artist is running from a distance towards a group of people playing basketball in the park. The artist is holding a pumpkin above their head and screaming "AAAAAAAAA". Second panel: The artist has leapt up and is in position to slam dunk the pumpkin into the basketball hoop. Panel three: the pumpkin splatters violently against the backboard of the basketball hoop, sending orange pumpkin goop everywhere. Panel four: the players stand staring, covered in pumpkin goop and shocked. Panel five: the artist stares at them wide-eyed, also covered in the goop and says "it's October FIRST". Their hand reaches towards their face. Panel six: the artist rips off their own face like a rubber mask to reveal a skeleton beneath. Panel 7: the group of players stand shocked and horrified, watching as the skeleton falls to the ground in a pile of bones, the sound effects says "CLATTER".

Aw man, that's why the ability economy was changed in 2? That's a shame, I really loved the experience of teasing as many fights as I could out of a dwindling resource pool. I get it, but that was one of the biggest things I missed from 1.

...wwwhy? The play is written in modern English, and set in Italy. (Even if this is a classic case of not understanding what Old English is, using the original text isn't even much of a flourish. Joss Whedon used original text. Baz Luhrman used original text. That's really normal for Shakespeare.)

That is, even if you find recordings of the old show, the experience of listening to them the way they were originally intended is lost. You are a different audience, and that old audience will never exist again.
020
Captain Tempest's Monster🧟 @captempestcomic.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
We don't have a big audience, but there are people who encountered our work for the first time on every platform. What does it mean to the broader texture of our audience for any version to become lost? Maybe it's all old radio shows. Everything is meant to be consumed in the context of its moment.
121
Captain Tempest's Monster🧟 @captempestcomic.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Is there a "real" version of the comic? Each has its minor differences and compromises. The print version doesn't have the page names, which are often jokes or thematic allusions. Our comic can't be lost the way a lot of work on Tapas is likely to be, but if a platform went down, SOMETHING is lost.
130
Captain Tempest's Monster🧟 @captempestcomic.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
The Tapas thing has me thinking about platforms, and the nature of an audience. We post Captain Tempest in like a half dozen places, including chopped up for vertical scroll and individual panels, depending on format. Do we have one audience? Or one for each platform? (we've also got a website)

Chapter 5, Page 9: Terrifying and Monstrous captaintempest.com/comic/206-te...
Splash page from the webcomic "Captain Tempest." A gigantic man, perhaps eight feet tall, stands crouched in the smashed-in doorway, astride two Nazi soldiers he's evidently killed with his bare hands. His skin is sunken and mottled, his hair long, black, and stringy, and he's dressed in the greatcoat, breeches, and boots of an 18th century traveler, all tattered, aged, and damaged. In the room behind him, flames and dancing high. His gaze is locked ahead, staring with obvious malice.

MAN: ...Du. Maskierter Mann.

This week on #RunawaytotheStars: A tapetum lucidum is a kind of mirror. Catch up: runawaytothestars.com Read ahead: patreon.com/jayrockin
Talita finishes packing the cart in the puddle of light by the apartment building's front entrance, then is startled by a movement to her left. Emerging from the darkness between the two buildings are four large shadows, with 7 eerie eyes flashing the artificial light back towards her. It's Verengt and 3 other centaurs, all barely visible silhouettes. One of them points their trunk to the matriarch and whispers something, causing them to take notice of Talita. Talita looks back at them, apprehensive. Her own pupils reflect the light too, the uneven angle causing one to glow, and the other to mostly remain dark. Verengt walks toward Talita out of the darkness, their body gaining detail as they slowly become illuminated by the door lights.Verengt approaches Talita, who is hunched fearfully over the cart. Verengt: Talita. Good evening. Talita straightens up and nervously touches her neck. Verengt's trunk points up in a loose curl. Talita: H- hi Verengt! I need to apologize for earlier, I– Verengt: No, we should apologize. I believe we misinterpreted you. Do you speak human language with your face, as well as your trunk? They gesture with an open palm over their own face.Talita: Oh! …Yes, I do! Verengt: Showing teeth means something very different to them, doesn't it? Talita: Humans pull their lips up and bare their teeth to show they're happy or friendly.   She points at her face and pulls her lips back into a quick smile that mostly shows gums. Talita: I've lived with them so long that I do it habitually. Verengt: I see. I usually look for a trunk curl... They lift their trunk upwards in a relaxed curl. Verengt: Do humans not know what this means? Talita returns the curl, with a small closed-lip smile. Talita: No, they usually don’t. Verengt looks off thoughtfully. Verengt: They always seem so unfriendly to me, with their flat nose and teeth flashing as they speak. But I suppose that's just how they're built…

I think best case scenario is some kind of spooky photoshoot? Some friends of mine once took part in a really neat project re-staging actual viking burial finds.
Two black-and-white photographs side-by-side, each an overhead view of a shallow grave lined with stones, each containing a person in 9th century garb, posed with Viking grave goods.

Ollie was a little buzzed on his "get in touch with the common man" thing at the time of Green Lantern/Green Arrow. He'd lost his fortune and was living in a run-down walkup. Also, I don't think he'd ever been anything like a billionaire, "just" a multi-millionaire.

The number 52 has become a sort of Easter-egg mascot for DC, owing to the creative energy of the original maxi-series. "The New 52" initiative has basically nothing to do with "52" the series beside the number, for example.
010
Captain Tempest's Monster🧟 @captempestcomic.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
A lot happened in 52, it was pretty good. The number 52 also turned out to be foreshadowing for the revelation that because of the Crisis, a new multiverse had been created -- not Infinite Earths, but fifty-two of them. Those earths were only really explored in the inferior follow-up, "Countdown."
120
Captain Tempest's Monster🧟 @captempestcomic.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
After Infinite Crisis, DC did a gimmick where a bunch of their books jumped forward "One Year Later," to give the aftermath of the crisis time to settle and to shake up the status quo. "52" was a weekly maxi-series that covered the events of that untold year in real time: 52 weeks, 52 issues.

That this is being framed as a "Cruella" type origin story or whatever is giving me the shakes. We learn about Scrooge top to bottom! He's sympathetic in the original text, but part of that is making it clear that NOTHING can justify being the person he's become. That's the story!
