Raccoons don't have to be foraging all night long. They can, and do, take periodic rests that can include dozing. Here we see a raccoon taking advantage of the safety offered by the Raccoonobahn to rest before heading back out. Video is 6x normal speed. #mammals ❤️🦝❤️

It's a crazy timeline out there *waves hands at everything* so this squirrel dropped by to say 'hello and hang in there.' #mammals
A day, color photo from my camera trap. It shows part of my garden with various plants, flowers and shrubs dotted around in the middle and background. Small landscaping rocks on the ground in the foreground on the left side with dirt, bark and leaf litter on the ground all over. A squirrel is posing in front of the camera with its tail held up. The lighting is difficult for the camera at this time of day, I typically have the camera here for night shots.

Hedgehogs Are Going on Our Banknotes — Now Let’s Give Them the Protection They Deserve! Some wonderful news for Britain’s hedgehogs! The Bank of England has announced that the European hedgehog is one of four native wildlife species chosen to feature on the next generation of British banknotes, alongside the barn owl, Atlantic puffin and buff-tailed bumblebee. And there’s even more to celebrate:…

We have seen 1 or 2 over the years but it’s quite rare to see them here. Typically if I get one on camera it only stays a few weeks then is gone. Perhaps this is a family with this year’s pup. I have a soft spot for coyotes and hate how they’re vilified.

You never know what poses the raccoons might make, this one made me smile. 'Praying raccoon' somewhat suitable for a Sunday I think. 😁 #mammals
A black and white night photo from my camera trap. It shows part of my garden with various flowers, plants and shrubs in the middle and background. A raccoon is sitting almost in the center of the frame with its head held up towards the sky at a 45 degree angle and its front paws are clasped together. Its mouth is slightly open so we can see some teeth.

I too could be wrong, I’m no expert. Friends thought turkey so I tried Merlin and it said wild turkey. It (Merlin) doesn’t know if a blue jay is mimicking.

I love the Merlin app and use it a lot. I think in this case the vocalizations did sound Turkey like so I think it's a win for the Merlin app even though it was a blue jay. The app can't differentiate mimicking. 👍

Sue @cameratrapsue.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I think Merlin did great, it's really interesting to get its take on the vocalizations. I played the original audio to a birdwatcher friend who immediately said Turkey. I've got clips of blue jays sounding like hawks too.

Sue @cameratrapsue.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Sound down! I had Merlin app listen to this blue jay as I hadn't heard this vocalization. Merlin said 'Wild Turkey'. Blue jays have advanced vocal learning capabilities & large repertoires, they can produce surprising vocalizations including domestic/wild turkey gobbles & clucks. #birds

The weather skunk says it is, or has been, raining. It's so nice to see a skunk around again after so many years of no skunks. I doubt my neighbors feel the same way. 🤣 #mammals
A black and white night photo from my camera trap showing part of my garden with small landscaping rocks to the bottom left. Dirt, bark and leaf litter to the bottom right of the frame. Various plants, shrubs and flowers are in the middle and background. It has been raining and a striped skunk is in the photo, broadside to the camera, its head towards the left of the frame. Its fur is clumped in places as it is wet. Overall the skunk looks soggy but fit and healthy.

Something is definitely glowing but the eyes of a slug, as far as I know, and I'm no expert, don't have the Tapetum Lucidum which gives the "glowing" eye effect seen in animals under flashlights or IR lights. I may be proved wrong but that's what I learnt long ago.

Yes 👍 I managed to harvest over 100 4 o'clock seeds from one plant this year so I'm really hopeful for lots of new 4 o'clocks next year (they're in an envelope in a cool, dark cupboard right now). As I harvested them I told the plant it will live on through its seeds. I *may* be a big softy.

Such a privilege to have them and the other wildlife in the garden though we do have to be careful when coming & going - have to check for bears at night & raccoons and mule deer herd during day. One year we had bucks head butting each other all over the garden so we stayed in until it was over.

One of the mule deer triplets taking a break in amongst my flowers and plants this afternoon. I went out to refill the birdbath and there s/he was lying down, just watching me. I had the phone in my pocket so I spoke quietly to her as I took a few photos then left her alone. #mammals
A mule deer fawn from this year, no more spots but still smaller than mama. She, or he, is lying down on the dirt/leaf litter and bark in amongst some plants and flowers. She/he has huge ears somewhat like a mule and that's why they're called mule deer. I just looked out the window and she/he is still there.

Tried a super cheap camera (2nd hand) for all night nightlapse, composite photo 999 photos w/internal intervalometer. Good results, new moon made my guess at exposure a bit bright. Set it up in afternoon & left it to its own devices, should've lowered the ISO more. Clouds & rain expected this week.
A night photo showing Cheyenne Mountain in the background with trees to the left and right frame edges and tree tops in center bottom of photo. This is a composite photo of 999 individual photos so we see the apparent movement of the stars in star trails arcing over the mountain, they have different colors depending on their temperatures. Clouds came in and we see some in the photo, sometimes obscuring the stars. The antennas on Cheyenne Mountain are seen along with their lights and we see car lights trails going up and down the mountain to the antennas/buildings on the summit. This will be a meteor watching camera during good weather and clear skies at night.

Quail Lake, Colorado Springs. The paddle board club had a halloween inspired LED illuminated paddle around the lake under a full moon this evening.
Zoomed in cell phone photo showing part of Quail Lake with trees and mountains in the background. There are lots of people dressed as witches on paddle boards on the lake. Some of the paddle boards have LED lights on them.A long exposure photo showing the paddle board lights as the paddle boarders moved slowly around on the lake this evening. The moon casts light onto the water in a swathe of light just left of center in the frame. It was a full moon tonight.Intentional camera movement as the paddle boarders moved around the lake during a long exposure photo. You know me, I do love lights and patterns.
