It’s happening!!
A do not enter sign, with an except bikes sign underneath on a signal post on the corner of Mossland and Elm. There’s a purple sign next to it on a separate signpost that says “neighborway” with icons of a child on a scooter, a person wearing a skirt on a bike with a front basket, and a person walking a dogAn electronic traffic sign reading “open for bikes” with a tree turned yellow and a couple of houses in the backgroundThe end of Mossland street facing elm, there are cones blocking it off from traffic (although a few gaps for bikes). There’s also a faint line painted in a cul de sac shape where I assume they’re going to do some painting for a more permanent set of markings and flexposts

I am very psyched for this change. Avoiding the Porter square shopping center parking lot on my reverse commute will be better for everyone. Also, I am excited to see exactly how long it will take drivers to mow down the mossland flexpost diverters.

TAKE YOUR BALLOTS TO A DROP BOX THIS NOVEMBER. Don't use a mailbox. Use a ballot drop box, because the US postal service is _already_ fucking with ballots. This is not a guess, theory, or extrapolation, this is an _observed fact_. Here's the Thurston […] [Original post on mastodon.murkworks.net]
The Problem with Mail Delivery

By law, we must certify the election by a specific deadline. For the primary, that date was August 18, 2026, two weeks after Election Day. Any ballot that arrives after this date cannot be counted, even if it was mailed on time.

We are seeing two main problems with the post office:

* Slow Mail: Many people mailed their ballots well before Election Day, but the ballots sat in post office sorting centers for weeks. In one case, a ballot was mailed in late July but didn't reach our office until after the August 18 deadline. It took 19 days to arrive, so it could not be counted.

* Ballots sent Between Counties: In Washington State, you can drop your ballot into any official drop box in the state. Other counties collect those ballots and mail them back to us using USPS Priority Mail. In the past, this worked well. But this year, mail sent on August 5 didn't reach us until August 24, six days after the deadline.

So far, our office has received 70 valid ballots that arrived after the certification deadline. This has never happened before, and it means those votes could not be counted. One ballot took 19 days to reach us.

What We Are Doing for November

No voter should lose their vote when they’ve followed every rule.

To fix this for the November election, we will no longer rely on the post office to send ballots between counties. Instead, our team will personally drive to neighboring counties to pick up and hand-deliver these ballots ourselves. Even though this costs extra money and time, it is necessary to make sure every vote counts.

Time Traveler Causes of Death xkcd.com/2976/
A modified XKCD comic titled "TOP CAUSES OF DEATH FOR TIME TRAVELERS BY GEOLOGIC ERA:" features a tall, vertical rectangle representing Earth's timeline from its formation down to the present day. Along the left axis, tick marks indicate time intervals from "EARTH FORMS" at the top down through "4 BILLION YEARS AGO," "3 BILLION YEARS AGO," "2 BILLION YEARS AGO," "1 BILLION YEARS AGO," "500 MILLION YEARS AGO," and ending at "NOW" at the bottom. The vertical column is divided into stacked sections labeling the leading cause of death for each period: beginning at the top with "LAVA," followed by a section for "ASPHYXIATION," a thin band for "METEORS," a large section for "ASPHYXIATION," an even larger block spanning roughly 2.2 billion to 700 million years ago labeled "SLIGHTLY SLOWER ASPHYXIATION," and then smaller bands near the bottom labeled "FREEZING," "STARVING," "EATEN BY FISH," "TRAMPLED," and "EATEN BY MAMMALS." Next to the very bottom sliver representing the present day, an arrow points to the text "HIT BY SUV."

Bike (me) v car at Rindge Ave. Minor, no damage or injuries, but I’m spitting mad, @cambridgemass.bsky.social seeclickfix.com/issues/22265...
Tratic/Pedestrian Signal Issue
42.39404 - 71.14035
Open
Please place a no turn on red restriction sign on right-turning drivers from northbound ABP onto eastbound Rindge Ave in accordance with the city's code change to ban right on red.
Please also replace the archaic pedestrian pushbuttons with ADA compliant APS units.
I was bicycling northbound on the adjacent trail, pressed the non-ADA-compliant call button, waited for the exclusive pedestrian phase, and when the ped signal turned green, proceeded to cross, when a driver turning on red cut in front of me at high speed and clipped my front wheel.
This is unacceptable. When Just A Start development rebuilt the pedestrian landing and median, they could have been directed to revise the turn radius to make turns slower and less permissive-looking. They could (should) have been directed to replace and not simply relocate the old cast iron non-audible ped button in accordance with the ADA, and most of all, they should have been directed to install a NTOR sign.
The City DOT then had a second bite at the apple, when they installed a blankout NTOR sign for the westbound Rindge approach. Right turns on red onto Rindge remained permitted apparently, and ped buttons to call an exclusive phase at one of the worst intersections in Cambridge remained vintage-1960.
Fix this ASAP, as most of the ingredients that predict pedestrian fatality crashes (high vehicle and ped/bike volume, high downhill approach speed, poor sightlines, high radii turn, residential and retail boundary) are present. I would also consider if you also violated Department of Justice ADA guidance on remediating accessibility barriers when substantive work on intersection signals was performed twice, and APS hardware was not installed.
