Do I still freeze up sometimes? Sure! But my mouth has made these sounds before, my mind has used this grammar pattern before, so it’s easier to let autopilot take over than try to do it from scratch every time.

The thing that made this easier for me was to talk to myself, out loud, in my target language as much as possible. I’m conducting full on interviews with myself in the shower and the car just to get in the habit of physically speaking the language.

Every single time, I have had the right of way. I’ve had my head up and on a swivel (not looking at a phone!), and was wearing bright, visible colors. Every single time, it’s been a man driving either an oversized pickup truck or a sports car.

And, of course, the surprise on people’s faces when a very white person suddenly starts conversing with them or scolding their rowdy kids in Japanese is always hilarious. Because I never lived in Japan, my accent is a hodgepodge of past teachers’ accents, so they’re never sure where I’m from.

I love being able to help Japanese speakers at the library in NYC because they don’t expect to encounter anyone who speaks their language. The joy, relief, and surprise on their faces is part of what keeps me motivated in my studies.
