I skimmed the article yesterday and if I recall they just counted the number of times their sources mentioned each show in their top (whatever), so it’s more a list of most mentioned good shows than actually saying one is best

If someone hands me one, usually trash unless there’s something I want to remember about it (usually trashed that evening). But if I pick it up, that’s because there’s something I was to remember or find later, and I’ll either keep it until I do or take a photo and add that to my to-do item

I also just remembered another book I completely bailed on due to bad prose once it got to the (almost literal) “as you know, Bob” exposition, so apparently I do have a threshold somewhere

As I recall the issue for me was more copy-editing; there was blocking and sentence-level things that were just confusing. Mixed up or ambiguous pronoun antecedents, etc. It was just enough friction to be offputting without any individual piece being so bad I’d give up

It was one of the odder times for me as a reader/author but also a learning experience… now I wonder what it would have been like if I enjoyed the writing but still wasn’t getting hooked

I went through something similar with the early books of a series about a year ago… I teetered on the edge of dropping it multiple times, but in this case I enjoyed the story despite tue writing, and the writing improved in later books

Yeah, retreats add a lot to my enthusiasm and ability to get stuff done (before, also, as I’m usually trying to sprint to complete something for break-out groups right up to the deadline). So they’re the closest I know of to that magical willpower but they are only periodic

for your #questpit consideration: THE ISLAND’S DAUGHTER. #q #a #f #sff #wf #u
Questpit guide to The Island’s Daughter / upmarket genre-bent fantasy/ 104k words / by Aleta Burchyski / now queryingPitch: THE ISLAND’S DAUGHTER is set in a late Bronze Age reimagining of Earth. Tamda, a grieving widow ostracized by her family, is summoned home to help her grandmother lead their island nation. But when a celestial wyrm crash-lands on the island’s sacred Mountain, Tamda must conquer her self-doubt and kill it before it calls its master to devour Earth.

This upmarket genre-bent fantasy is written from the tight third-person perspective of Tamda and her family. It will appeal to readers who enjoy the immersive world-building of Between Two Fires and crave a strong female perspective like in T. Kingfisher’s Nettle and Bone.Narrative elements:
Feminist cosmic horror
An older, wiser female main character
Female friendships
Character-driven plot
Upmarket writing
Found family and rediscovered family
Dynastic drama and complex morality
Realistic magicalism
Grounded, immersive world building
Rich mythology inspired by folklore
Spice that moves the story forwardComp titles: The Fox Wife, Nettle and Bone, Between Two Fires

#questpit #Q #YA #F BLOOD OVER BRIGHT HAVEN x ANIMORPHS x HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON When the failed son of a dragonslayer undergoes a monstrous change, his already brittle sense of self-worth takes a nosedive, and he ends up needing the support of a fellow drake almost as much as he resents it.
An Agent's Guide to THE SIGIL & THE SERPENT

By Synell J. Hartman

A YA Fantasy at 97k words
Now Querying

In the background are two images, one by UltraHurtMan and one by SharpibeesThe Pitch: When a dragonslayer becomes a dragon, he must come to grips with his new body, befriend another dragon, and reject the evils of his imperial home to survive being hunted down by his human friends.

A magical city, and imperial indoctrination... (Blood Over Bright Haven Cover) ...meets transformation trauma... (Animorphs Cover) ...and a hint of draconic wonder. (How to Train Your Dragon Poster)A mood board of images from pinterest, interspersed with commissioned art of a blue dragon from pocketss, Flatw00ds, and Fimbry. Text appears over the images: Transformation, Personal Stakes, Asexual Dragon MC, Coming of Age, Struggles of Self-Worth in the shadow of ImperialismAn excerpt of text next to an image by pocketss of two dragons talking:

"Every single time you could've done a sensible thing, you did the exact opposite.” She chuckled, looking off into the distance. "About the time you started crying over a little fire, I honestly thought you were joking. And that ridiculous thing with your claws..."
Pathi had his fists raised by the time she turned to face him.
She gave another, terser laugh, and regarded him with annoyance. "Truly, you present an unpredictable threat." She sat down on her rock, claws folded calmly in her lap, and beckoned him with a slight toss of her head. "Come on then. Walk to me. Walk at all."
Pathi warily eyed the rocky ground between them. Only slightly uneven. Were his legs still human, he could've taken it at a run.

I also looked at Amtrak to ABQ - two hours from my place to the terminal (not hugely different than flying) but then a 20 hour trip that included going in the exact opposite direction for 1 state. It could be so much better… (the price was comparable enough as long as I didn’t want a sleeper berth)

BEHOLD! The absolutely stunning cover art for Flightless, my solo-written debut, is here. I'm so excited to share my social justice fantasy heist with y'all. @sumrow.bsky.social absolutely killed the artwork. Some details I particularly love are in the comments.
Cover of Flightless: Riff is front and center. He is a man with "glidesheaths"--flaps of skin extending from his arms and sides to help him glide. And he's showing off, gliding through the air. He wears a red hood and brown tattered clothing with patches galore and a knife in his boot. In the background is a beautiful sunset sky and a few "Divians" or flyers--people with wings. Below him is the City of Quilia, a town with red roofs and towers abutting a bay of blue water.

If you're a writer, wondering why you should bother writing with the world on fire. It feels like it's not important, I need you to understand that it is. Even if it is just because it keeps you moving forward? Even if it only brings YOU joy, that gives you energy to fight & survive.
