I agree with all the takes about an attack on the humanities being an attack on critical thinking, &c. It’s also about joy, though. ‘Why bother studying that’ is always also a sneer at — why do you think you should get to do something you enjoy? Grow up and be miserable all the time!

Ai is just a tool, its boosters say. But tools are indeed not morally neutral. AI is a mere tool in the way a gun is a mere tool. Both should be closely and fiercely regulated.

Powerful words from University of Pennsylvania students against their university's headlong rush into uncritically embracing AI:
The irony is that as Penn pours endless money and energy into AI advancement in its attempt to get ahead, the University is only quickening its own demise. AI cannot coexist with education -- it can only degrade it. As technology advances and workers are replaced by machines, schools are some of the only places we have left to explore and wrestle with human thought. With our own university leading the charge, AI is now corrupting those few sacred spaces and leaving us with nowhere to engage in true scholarship.

Reality imitates meme. (This is superb reporting, making visible the consequences of a failing funding model.) www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Gru Has A Plan Meme.
Gru is explaining his plan very excitedly with a whiteboard. On the first white board, he has written "we target international students to get their money." Second whiteboard: "we use their money to build shiny buildings." Third whiteboard: "International students stop coming because humans aren't an infinite resources and international relations are volatile. Empty buildings need to be paid off." In the fourth panel he looks in consternation and realitsation at the text.

Happy Family Day to all our colleagues in Canada! Did you know that John Donne’s grandfather, John Heywood, was also a poet, as well as a playwright and musician serving in four royal courts from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I? Their poems even appear together in at least one Early Modern Manuscript!

It's Tuesday. Do we want to do a bit of Tudor? Yes, we think so too. Here's a close up of the vine and grape decoration on the bargeboards of the Hall's 1601 extension. We've thrown in a Tudor rose for good measure too.
We are looking at a timber framed building with two rooves on a sunny day. The oak barge boards have carved vines and grapes on them. There is also a carved rose at the point at where the two rooves meet.

My eternal favourite find in the Privy Council registers: Someone brought before the council for running across bridges in London at night knocking down lanterns and waking people up, before sticking a fish on the end of a sword and slapping people in the face with it. 10/10, no notes.
