1/6 Finished ‘This is where the future bleeds’ - the new novel by @mikebrooks668.bsky.social. As always, he has a wonderful command of language, painting vivid scenes on every page. The story is full of adventure and wry humour in a similar style to the venerable Terry Pratchett.

Cover of the Novel "This is Where the Future Bleeds", by Mike Brooks.

The cover is an eerie blue black, with vivid yellows and greens haphazardly bleeding from the upper left of the cover. Blue wasps are present in the upper right and bottom left. In the exact centre, a dark haired woman stands with her back to us. She is wearing a red poncho, and holds a sword in her right hand, held casually downwards.

White text, in an elegant font states "This is where the future bleeds".

Painted up the Lord Veritant from the Spearhead magazine. I really enjoy the challenge of the Knights Excelsior theme; sinister paladins in pure white armour bestriding the battlefield and channelling eldritch lightning. Also finally got to try out the Jon Hodgson backgrounds! #nerdlings

Lord Veritant, of the Knights Excelsior. A tall, imposing warrior in medieval plate armour.

Their armour is white, with ornate gold details on the shoulders and right knee pad. They weld a blue flaming sword in their left hand, while their right is obscured by an ornate cream cloak.

This rear view shows an ornate gold and blue shield strapped to their back. It has numerous parchment prayer scrolls fluttering in the breeze.

The word ‘Excelsis’ is embroidered on the hem of the cream cloak.

Did a little conversion on the Lord-Veritant that came with the Spearhead magazine. I found the original model about 20% too busy, so tried to tone it down a little. We’ll see how it comes together when painted. Thoughts?

A Stormcast Eternal Lord-Veritant and Gryph-hound. The model has been converted to remove the flaming staff, trim the lightning collar, smooth over the cloak, and add a helmeted head.

Finished Tomb Raider 4 (remastered) this week. I’ve got mixed feelings about this entry. The highs are high - great locations, interesting platforming. I did find some of the later levels to drag somewhat, and the backtracking became onerous. Definitely glad to have played it though!

“Rest assured Commodore, I have my finest troops stationed at high alert. Only a fool would even attempt to breach this location.” - Lt. Cavendish, moments before disaster.

"Well done, O mortals, you have solved my test. The ancient wisdom waits at your command. I'll speak the truth to any choice request. But you may ask me only one demand." “Really, just one question?” "Indeed. Farewell, O mortals, go in peace." ……. “Godsdammit Hamish!”

A female Sphinx, resplendent wings outstretched, gazes down from her perch on a party of adventurous. The Sphinx has an African queens face, with Egyptian jewellery. In the background are tall, sandy corinthian columns. In the foreground you can see the black cloak of a rogue, the blonde hair and bagpipes of a dwarves beard, and centrally the armoured form of a female knight with a poleaxe.

Rear view of the Sphinx, showing the wing detail. They are reminiscent of a peacock, with green metallics at the tip, a band of peach coloured feathers, and colour shifting purple/blue at the bottom.

Photo of bird perched on a branch, description from ebird: ‘A bee-eater of forest and forest edge that appears entirely black at a distance, but in good light shows a bright red throat and electric blue belly, undertail, and chest spots. Western birds have a black eye-line bordered in blue. Unmistakable when seen well. Call is a sharp “ji-lip!” that is not often heard.’

Finished playing Necromunda: Underhive Wars recently. Really enjoyed this game, which got a lot of criticism when it released. It captured the tabletop spirit, with great verticality and immersive maps. Operations mode really lets you differentiate gangs and feels like playing a proper campaign.
