I like turn based games so loops kinda come natural to any of those, and I can see why people were using more linear or narrative examples as "games without loops" but even those in some way have you doing something at a meta level (grinding for gear/xp -> completing task) so it's like ugh! Think!

Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 1h
Yeah it was driving me crazy. I think people were just rubbed wrong to think that they might be in some kind of skinner box of gameplay but the gameplay choices changing the loop is what makes that design tool so interesting, or drive people to keep playing!

It's such a wildly broad subject that it's crazy when people think of anything as being objectively true. The thing that comes to mind for me is how many folks thought "game loops" is a bad design thing. That really threw me for a... Loop.

I think it comes down to frequency and context, but I would imagine it's probably pretty safely PG13

Yeah today's code can get bad but it doesn't feel as entangled. I like the term lasagna code cause nowadays there's various layers of abstraction to mess with. Probably a thing back in the day too, but feels like the structure of everything now.

But yeah in the hands of experienced devs I'm sure a lot of the more technical stuff really isn't that spooky. I think I avoid it because it's a little unusual and I want the code to read as natural and easy to follow as possible.

Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 28/09/2026
Yeah! It's a bit before my time, but I think it got kind of a bad rep from the mental load of following execution. I've taught a lot of folks to code, it's interesting to see the logical shenanigans people make when learning to code, and I wouldn't underestimate what craziness goto would add lol.

Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 28/09/2026
Whenever possible I think I try to restructure the code to avoid it, I think. I'm pretty positive I've used it or something like it in perl as well, but it's been yeeeeeeaaaars
010
Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 28/09/2026
I've certainly avoided using it, however, I've certainly used it in Lua, usually for loop control. It's very powerful, but with great power comes great responsibility or something. Without good guidelines or expectations, it can be used to make abominable code.

You know what while I agree this version is more correct I actually really liked the vibe the messier lines gave. Felt very grunge which worked with a lot of the other aesthetic

So I used to do this a lot, and it's mostly fine so long as the macbook itself is in a well ventilated area. It gets plenty hot but I've never noticed any particular performance issues due to it. I've seen stories of the screen getting a bit heat damaged, but I used mine open with external monitors

I was watching a video that touched on it a little bit in the beginning here, regarding "wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle" that tends to be an issue with open world game design. Like, a big world really only exists in service to spread out tasks that all feel kind of the same.

On that last point, I think maybe the world size isn't enough even. When I think of the "open world" genre, there's other things that come with that world. Arbitrary collectibles, quests or missions, etc. BotW/ToTK do this a lot, but it never feels too bad to me, at least.

Oooh that's interesting! I'll have to try that out. Feels like it may change the way I approach this game entirely!
010
Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 23/09/2026
That makes a lot of sense, and I was thinking about doing so. It feels more puzzley, tbh. Lots of thinking required to get to a location. I had initially thought of a seed-based level system, and that might work. Then it's about optimizing each level, maybe.

Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 23/09/2026
Not completely random! It operates similarly to tetris, where the total number of tiles are shuffled and placed into the queue at once, this ensures at most you may run into 2 of the same tile, but for the most part it's a pretty balanced blend.

#FallingBlockJam 2026 entry coming along! I've been trying to figure out a good scoring system, and while time feels like the obvious choice, it doesn't feel very good. It's a bit tricky to plan once there's a lot of pieces on the board. #gamedev #feedbackwanted

If you're an artist keep learning, practicing & creating. A bunch of people who have no clue how anything works will tell you to give up, you suck, you'll be replaced etc. These are societal pressures artists have always faced, learn to build resilience. You'll be alright.

I think mechanically 3D Zeldas tend to have more to offer, but I really feel like I haven't given the 2D ones a real shot. Last time I played minish cap I got stuck in a puzzle cause apparently I am stupid.

At the same time, you explore a whole space station in say like, Among Us, but I've never considered that open world. So maybe "world" does denote a certain size the pass the bar of exploration even being a thing.
110
Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 22/09/2026
So, I think "world" isn't the operative word here and I'd say that refers to the game world, whatever that may be. "open" on the other hand seems more important. You should be able to explore many things here, without arbitrary restrictions (barring the standard tutorial island/room/etc)

Yeah, but I know lots of brilliant, productive folk. I wouldn't say any of them are 100% consistent. Don't hold yourself to too crazy of a standard, I would hope no one else expects that much of you. Or maybe better, make sure relaxing and decompressing is part of your consistent schedule!

Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 16/09/2026
Definitely take care of yourself, first and foremost. I've definitely struggled with this sorta feeling and I wish I had solutions but I think it's also important to fully relax, if you feel like you can't do things, maybe you shouldn't. (but! Don't forget the meds that's probably important)

Aaah I'll have to dig into that, yeah discovering the hover tooltip kind of blew my mind, soooo much of blender stuff feels pretty hidden and it's a little overwhelming to do some research on what's going on but this definitely gives me a starting point to pick at!
000
Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 15/09/2026
It is super overwhelming for sure! My current plan is to start with a problem I want to solve, which right now is world editing/creation. Geo nodes feels like the right start but it's entirely possible I wind up making my own tool eventually
010
Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 15/09/2026
Okay sorry this wasn't supposed to become a thread I accidentally learned more things you're telling me the default property of an input shows up when you hover over it and also updates depending on what it's connected to?!
Image Texture, not connected to anything, shows it's a 3D vector field...Image Texture, showing the field depends on "position" from the geometry, which is much further down the train of nodes ahead of it.
120
Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 15/09/2026
Update after messing with some other inputs, I think it's defaulting to "position" which I guess is coming from the geometry at some point. And that just ever so happens to work out perfectly, but only because the pixels in my image match the size of the mesh.
220
Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 15/09/2026
Yeah like shaders I could at least make some intuitive sense of. Geometry nodes on the other hand, I'm... not even sure where values are coming from most of the time and it drives me insane. This height map thing broke me today, like where is it mapping pixels to each vertex?!
Geometry nodes height map graph, which I easily cooked up but did not expect it to work without any logic doing the logicing.

I've been playing snakeburd and baba is you on pico-8 recently, those have been fun! Did a whole run of dinosort as well! I think it's kind of difficult discovering games that are worth playing, but I give the random feed in splore a run every now and then

Daniel / Caaz @caaz.me · 14/09/2026
The reason I've come back to is it is because I may or may not have thought of a use for it, but the next step for me is gonna be assigning materials instead of using per-pixel color. This'll allow me to get a lot more smooth detail. Before that though, I've gotta raycast a lot smoother.

Been playing around with my terrain rendering shader in Godot (the same one on my pinned post!) Updated it so that the normals can be inferred from the heightmap alone, so now I can use noise textures for world generation! #gamedev #indiedev #shader #godot

Yeah hard agree, I think a lot of games trying to walk the line of realism feel real strange if you stop to think about all the weird... game stuff that's in them. There's a weird level of suspension of disbelief that's needed to make them work. Love the stuff that isn't afraid to be a game.
