The Cornell AAUP Chapter is outraged by the sexual violence that was committed at Chi Phi in 2024. We call for the community to come together on Monday, October 5 at 4:30pm in Ho Plaza, to stand in support of the survivors of sexual violence. Our full statement is here.
We are outraged by the continued culture of misogyny and by the continued pervasiveness of violence against women at Cornell and at universities and colleges across the country. We are outraged that so many women at Cornell have reported experiencing nonconsensual sexual contact.

We are deeply disturbed by Cornell University administration’s response and communications to the community, initially in 2024 and now. Cornell administrators point community members to resources, but do not exercise leadership in creating space to process the harm, the outrage, and to change the culture of misogyny. In moments of crisis such as this, we need leaders, not administrators.

The Cornell administration’s responses reveal its failure to understand and respond appropriately to actual harm and threats to safety on campus. It has used its internal communications to issue elaborate accusations, and it has imposed excessive discipline against students for political protests where there was no threat of harm or violence. And yet, when it comes to sexual violence, Cornell’s communications have been oblique or silent, leaving the community frustrated, fearful, or angry about the administration’s lack of transparency about how it will take effective responses.

We stand in solidarity with victims of sexual violence. We are outraged by the treatment of Jane Doe. We stand in solidarity with student organizations who have been demanding better, with faculty, staff, and students who have been organizing spaces to process and demand change. We do not yet know precisely how or why this case was so egregiously mishandled. What we do know is that it is the most recent example of the systemic failure of Cornell to protect its community — from patients at Cornell Weill to Cornell students — from sexual violence. This system must change.

3:30 on a Friday is a ridiculous time for this but: WE STARTED A NEW SERIES! Stela: Science and Technology in Latin America, with editors David Dalton and Diana Montaño This basically means that if you work on just about anything in Latin American studies you’re now *required* to send it to me.
Stela: Science and Technology in Latin America, David S. Dalton and Diana J. Montaño, eds.
NEW SERIES: We are actively soliciting submissions. The title of the series, Stela, finds inspiration from its plural, stelae, the remarkable carved stone monuments of ancient Mesoamerica that served as technologies of communication, a medium for monumental art and storytelling that provided a public record of genealogies and political achievements within the community. This series is committed to establishing a similar platform in the present by fostering collaboration and preserving the valuable insights of scholars in Science, Technology, Society, and Culture Studies (STSC) from the Americas and throughout the world. We welcome submissions of monographs and edited volumes in the humanities and social sciences that explore the intersections of science and technology in Latin American society and culture. Topics of interest include (but are certainly not limited to): digital humanities; engineering; history of medicine; history of science; history of technology; medical humanities; philosophy of science; posthumanism/transhumanism; science and literature; technology and culture. We especially welcome projects that introduce new archival discoveries, propose new theoretical approaches to STSC in Latin America, explore the relationship of subaltern and understudied populations with scientific and technological discourse, cross disciplinary boundaries, and challenge us to rethink the various canons of Latin American thought.

I had no idea about this aspect of Hughes' life and work.
In late 1934, Langston Hughes, already established as a leading voice of literary Black America, traveled to Mexico City, where he stayed for more than five months and began translating short fiction by prominent Mexican and Cuban writers. These stories, as he wrote to a friend, explore “the revolutions and uprisings, sugar cane, Negroes, Indians, corrupt generals, [and] American imperialists,” and are “mostly all left stories, because practically all the writers down here are left these days.” But when Hughes proposed publishing the stories as a book, to be titled Troubled Lands, his agent discouraged him from further pursuing the project and it remained unpublished, until now, with only a handful of the translations making their way into contemporary magazines. This volume presents Hughes’s translations of these stories together for the first time as he originally envisioned. Edited by Ricardo Wilson, the book also features an introduction and brief biographies of the included writers.

Troubled Lands features thirty-three stories by eighteen writers, including Rafael Felipe Muñoz, Nellie Campobello, Lino Novás Calvo, Luis Felipe Rodríguez, Germán List Arzubide, Pablo de la Torriente-Brau, and Juan de la Cabada. The collection depicts Mexico in the wake of its revolution and Cuba in the years between the brutal regimes of Machado and Batista
