Not all environmental issues should be seen through the lens of CO₂. While coral death could increase ocean CO₂ uptake—since calcification releases CO₂ and dissolution releases alkalinity and allows the ocean to take up CO₂—reefs are vital for biodiversity, food, coastal protection, and livelihoods.
