One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

our muscles atrophy.
I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al

I can imagine a future in which old Dells with a functional installation of Windows 10 are sold on ebay for north of $10,000. (I doubt it, but I can imagine it)

There is an argument that some AI-psychosis-sufferers tend to make which I find very gross, stupid, and bad. It goes something like, “the way you are talking about Claude sounds a lot like how they used to talk about [some historically marginalized group], sooo, you better think about that”.

You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

Because now writing time comes at the expense of class time. So yes, there are "workarounds" in some sense, but they are much worse than the status quo circa 2020.

No it was not a bad proxy. It was imperfect, obviously, but for people trying to teach 75 students how to write in one semester, it was somewhat effective. And yes, handwriting is an option, but it is much worse for accessibility, and also because it greatly restricts the amount of writing time>

Because it's not worth my time to read a blog post that an author didn't actually believe/agree with/understand. Now I have this new task of discriminating meaningful vs non meaningful blog posts. Previously I could just read them. as for #2:

Is there anything that you can say about why it was bad? Was it a case where the AI-ness was not obvious and so you spent a lot of time on it before realizing what it was?

Brad Wyble @bwyble.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
More broadly, obviously conversations are useful, but the entire point of writing as a means of communication is to let people communicate at larger scales. If we have to roll back to conversations, how is that even considered progress?

For blog posters and other authors, it's obviously not realistic to talk to them to verify the authenticity of every piece they write. For students this adds a time cost onto already overloaded faculty members who used to be able to rely on writing as a rough proxy for engagement.

Brad Wyble @bwyble.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It also really matters when you are trying to know for certain whether students are genuinely engaged in the learning process

Slowing things down, in the positive sense of publishing fewer but more carefully authored papers has been the mainstream opinion in science for years. I have always thought and continue to think this is a good heuristic.

Knowing whether someone actually wrote something using their neurons is (noisily) predictive of whether they actually hold that belief and whether they will remember that they wrote it later.

I'm pessimistic about detection, but there is genuine value if it worked, in understanding whether the text you were reading was directly the result of a human mind. That matters for a lot of cases.

I'll bet the Prachee version would have been shorter and easier to read. While reading this I find that my mind kept glazing over the text and not taking it in.

Unbelievable. Except totally believable. We utterly fail at elite accountability in 🇺🇸, & elite universities have been at the forefront of that since Iran-Contra, repeatedly offering sinecures to the authoritarians. It's why all the things keep happening time & again: bsky.app/profile/mcop...

That's true, but they can only claim to rule it out (lying aside) for work he did post July 3. If he had asked probing questions about this approach prior to July 3, those would be in the training set presumably.

It's extremely unfortunate that everyone, even across the political spectrum, is somewhat vulnerable to these arguments, which is why they keep showing up, decade after decade, fascist after fascist. All we can do is call it out and find replacement politicians when we lose someone.

Brad Wyble @bwyble.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
I don't think we're "super vulnerable" (or there wouldn't even be a leftist movement). But it does happen, and Bernie, bless his soul, is pretty old now and his judgement is increasingly failing him, as we saw with Platner. It's a real shame, and also terrifying at the same time.
