What an insult to all Alaska. This is outrageous.
A screenshot of the ADN story with highlighted text quoting an anonymous EPA spokesperson: "A spokesperson for the federal Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday defended the decision, saying "due to the proactive cancellation of this grant, $20 million of hardworking US tax dollars are currently sitting in the U.S. treasury instead of swept into the Kuskokwim River."

I think it will take many years, even decades, to undo all the damage. Just look at all the judges he’s appointed (Supreme Court and otherwise), who will still be in place long after he’s gone.

The volcano is still at “code yellow” status, according to the observatory, which indicates “elevated unrest.” Me too, Mt. Spurr, me too.

A Mount Spurr eruption is ‘likely’ within weeks or months, scientists say
The most probable scenario is an eruption similar to those in 1953 and 1992, each lasting hours and producing clouds of ash that circulated for hundreds of miles around Southcentral Alaska.

All very true. Luckily I know enough people who have done or at least attempted ITI (both on foot and bike), that I have lots of expertise to pull from.

Brandon Wood @bwood.me · 11/02/2025
Definitely! I’ve ran in around -30F a few times, but not for anywhere near that long! That would become a real challenge at that distance, especially with how far apart the checkpoints are. I’m really impressed by the people who do that race unsupported!

Brandon Wood @bwood.me · 11/02/2025
I appreciate the vote of confidence 😄 It’s a much different mindset than something like Arrowhead, where you pretty much just have to keep moving, and don’t have a lot of time to rest at checkpoints. With ITI, you really have to plan for sleep.

I had been resistant to ITI for years, but more recently it’s become more alluring. I’ll probably end up giving it a shot in the next year or two.

Accessibility doesn't only help a small group of people. Accessibility helps everyone
Displaying a graphic of how it's not just people with permanent needs that can benefit from inclusive design, there are also temporary and situational needs. For example, someone who's deaf, vs has an ear infection, vs in a loud bar

The full list, with little characters representing each is:

Touch: one arm, arm injury, new parent holding a baby
See: Blind, Cataract, distracted driver
Hear: Deaf, ear infection, bartender
Speak: non-verbal, laryngitis, heavy accent (a picture of a Viking)
