This piece absolutely nails it and is a must read. This paragraph brought me to a standstill because it's also how we've gone from broad acceptance of trans people to journalists including comment from "gender criticals" fighting for "common sense" on every trans story.

Another layer of consideration: even if this is a genuine representation of a plethora of parental voices, we should consider also how it can be deployed in media disputes going forward. It is expressly positioned as a voice for parents, in opposition to teachers or public servants. What this will mean in practice, it seems likely, is that every time something new is introduced to the education system, the media will balance out the teacher or ministry explanation with a Parents Alliance reply. Detailed research and evidence-based conclusions will be held to the standard of
"common sense". And that, de facto, will serve the greater project of the right, undermining the idea of government itself.

I wake up the next morning and I realise that at some point Amity must have done some witchcraft and actually made me sleep. What a miracle worker. I can’t even remember how many days I haven’t, it’s all mushed together in my head, one great long sprint. But here I am, finally, halted. For a brief moment nothing exists outside of the soft, cotton sheets and the wonderful, alien stillness.
Then I realise what day it is, what I’m meant to be doing this morning, and my whole body remembers how stressed out it’s supposed to be. I jolt upright, pushing away the duvet that’s been laid over me.
Amity isn’t here.
Last thing I remember she was still curled up against me. The door to the bathroom is open, but I don’t hear any noise coming from in there. I’m think I’m alone.
Something’s wrong. Again. A snake of panic wraps its way around my windpipe.
“Amity?” Please let her answer back, I need her to be there. I know it’s irrational. I know it is. But my brain only has so much luck relaying this to the rest of me. There’s something in me that’s been waiting for this. Anticipating it. The moment when the thing that happened before will happen again. As it was always going to. A cliff edge I’ve been racing toward.

Slip pushed back against the Opponent and found it gave way easily. They had no one else’s will to feed off. They grunted with effort and a face started to form. Slip felt them growing solid and fleshy again. Good.

Tiktiktiktiktiktik. The red robed man was about to fall from his seat—
“Yes,” she agreed.
The skull tipped from the edge of the podium, smashing apart on the wooden floor. A simple, grey pellet sprang forth from it, excited to complete its mission.
With a last burst of strength Slip pulled herself and the Opponent into its path. There was a bright burst of anguish as it plunged through her back. She’d been shot before, though, and was ready for that. It was nothing compared to the pain she was already in anyway.
The creature screeched as it passed through her chest and into them. White light burst in through the hole in the ceiling, ripping through the walls and devouring what remained of this sad, awful world.
Slip waited to see if she’d been right.

Beyond the bars were people. Dido could see them more clearly now: a dour lot, the men all in black finery with top hats and cravats, the women in matching gowns and netted veils. It was like a funeral procession. She couldn’t make out the faces, though, no matter how much she tried—
And then Dido realised that, actually, she could see them just fine.
The crowd didn’t have faces. They were little more than grey smudges with deep black holes instead of eyes and mouths. There had to be dozens of the things assembled here, all in pairs, all twitching and sucking at the air.
They turned in unison toward her and gaped.
Dido scrambled to the back of the cage, trying to get out of sight of whatever they were. She could feel the gaze of the creatures on her, like those dark holes projected streams of coldness toward whatever they saw. She didn’t know if there was anyone around to hear but she still wanted to scream, just to let a bit of the horror out—
But she caught the cry and pushed it back down. That wouldn’t do any good, she told herself. Anyway, she was going to be rescued. The blue haired girl had said. And the creatures seemed to be keeping their distance for the moment.
