Pen, watercolor, black & white charcoal pencil.

Another featured piece from the Spooky Pants book.

A man in a sweater stands with his hands on his hips looking out of a large window with the curtains open. Things aren’t looking good outside, reader. A massive winged demon is emerging from the clouds as dozens of little ghosts and bone demons rip through the sky. On the ground below we see townsfolk running through the grass. Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail.

Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.

Newspaper headline: WOODLAND FAIRIES DEFEATED IN FLORAL ARRANGEMENT CONTEST. In the article’s photo we see a man in a sweater vest posing next to his winning arrangement with a 1st place medal around his neck. To his left we see his opponents: a defeated band of woodland fairies with their losing arrangement. They look distraught and confused and they should be, reader. How could this happen to the heavy tournament favorites? They’re woodland fairies. Flowers are their life and yet when it was all on the line, they came up short. The winner was just a floral enthusiast not even a professional florist. A shocking defeat and an inspiring win.

Knitting machine punch cards are a living form of computing history. 🧶💾 In "Punch Card Knitting," Nichole Misako Nomura explores how these binary codes are still used today, and the challenges of preserving them. 📚 Read it in VANISHING CULTURE, FREE: archive.org/details/vani...
What can knitting machines teach us about the history of computing?"They're an important piece of computing history—and crucially, one of the few that isn't only history because a broad community of people, on- and off-line, are still sharing knowledge on how to hack, restore, and use "Knitting punch cards are an important part of any feminist computing history, and surprisingly resilient." All my social media that I make are most often made with the intent of staying in the creative circle and potentially sharing my own art. BUT, I also do a lot of dog stuff and so I am likely just going to have this account be a combined dog/art place. Thank you for your time.

Hear hear! If you want wizards, witches, magic and fantasy by a British author, pick up a Terry Pratchett book~ (he was also a huge ally)

The actual sf community is acutely aware of this. See, for instance, this article by writer Charles Stross. Also, "Silicon Valley completely lacking any understanding of sf works they quote" has become a meme by itself (see "Torment Nexus", mentioned in the article). Tldr: it makes us cringe. Hard.

We've been getting a lot of questions about how the Internet Archive digitizes books. The short answer: page by page, by hand. You may remember our viral 2021 video of Eliza Zhang scanning a book. That's still how we do it. Meet Eliza, and learn how we scan books: blog.archive.org/2021/02/09/m...

Just void-posting so ignore me, But I wonder what the culture is around here about liking things further back in someone's account. I am a long term Tumblr user so it's totally normal to like someone's super old stuff. Same vibe here?

Recalled the song in episode 9 of TADC, "too much to get over", and how it made me pretty sad so I looked it up again yesterday and lo... it made me mega sad all over again.

Good thread. Popular SF&F has always been woowoo-adjacent. The overlap between purchasers of SF paperbacks and, for instance, Edgar Cayce books was large. And woowoo is a very effective delivery vehicle for race “science”, eugenics, authoritarianism, and the whole rest of the fascist package.

Three spherical particles exit a small doorway. One is bandaged and two are cracked, they all look cross. The first is standing by a sign that reads “rate your particle collider experience”. Below the sign are three buttons with faces: happy neutral and, the one the particle is about to press, unhappy.
