Why do some animals have many social partners while others invest in a few strong relationships? Our new @royalsocietypublishing.org paper suggests the answer may be: it depends on the weather ☀️🌧️ 🐑 tinyurl.com/mry3mtpf

Females hyenas have greter reproductive inequality due to social inheritance of privilege! The study I presented at @isbe2026.bsky.social and done with the @hyenaproject.bsky.social came out finally!! Check it out! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Lifetime fitness (lifetime reproductive success) and annual survival are heritable and genetically correlated in wild female baboons! Moreover, nearly all of the genetic variance in LRS can be attributable to survival to first reproduction. Out at Evolution now: academic.oup.com/evolut/advan...

Lifetime fitness and annual survival are heritable and highly genetically correlated in a wild primate population
We estimated the additive genetic variance (VA) and heritability of lifetime and time-limited fitness in a wild female baboon population in Kenya. We found

A longer version of the Tufts announcement about the abduction of an international graduate student by federal authorities, circulating on Twitter and Reddit.
March 25, 2025
Dear members of the Tufts community,
We have received reports that an international graduate student was taken into custody this evening by federal authorities outside an off-campus apartment building in Somerville. The university had no pre-knowledge of this incident and did not share any information with federal authorities prior to the event, and the location where this took place is not afiliated with Tufts University.
From what we have been told subsequently, the student's visa has been terminated, and we seck to confirm whether that information is true. The university has no additional information at this time about the cause or circumstances of the student's apprehension and is attempting to leam more about the incident. Following university protocol, the Office of University Counsel will assist in connecting the student to external legal resources should the individual request our assistance.
We realize that tonight's news will be distressing to some members of our community, particularly the members of our international community. We will continue to provide information, support, and resources in the days ahead as more details become available to us. While we await further information, we want to remind the members of our community that the university has an established protocol for responding to goverment agents who arrive on campus (or off-campus), for an unannounced site visit. To activate that protocol, it is best to call the Tufts University Police Department at 617-627-3030 and inform the dispatcher, who will notify the appropriate university
Available support resources
If you are feeling in need of support, we encourage you to connect and spend time with your friends, your classmates, and your loved ones, whether at or outside of Tufts.
On campus, there are multiple points of support for students that can respond to individual and group needs. Here's how to get started:
• The International Center is available to provide additional stud…

I would have gone with Tyrannidae, Trochilidae, Thraupidae/Furnariidae/Muscicapidae, but reading through the comments I think Columbidae might beat one of the last three...

I made a starter pack for animal behaviour researchers / ethologists! please share and feel free to self-nominate or suggest others to be added as this is very much still a work in progress and not an exhaustive list 🌍🧪😊 #SciSky #BioSky #AnimalBehaviour #AnimalBehavior #Ethology go.bsky.app/Tr8VZpV

A common misunderstanding of climate change I see is that "we either hold warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, or we're all doomed." That threshold matters. But every bit we can do helps. Every ton of CO2 not released helps. This sucks. Feel your grief. But don't give up, don't stop fighting.

We also discovered that the trends of change in the estimated breeding values of social dominance, udder health and muscle mass are consistent with selection for social dominance in the population (4/5)

We used bivariate animal models to see genetic correlation between soc dominance and fitness, morphology traits. Winning agonistic interactions is genetically correlated with more developed frontal muscle mass, lower fertility and milk production, and poorer udder health (3/5)

Aosta cows are selected for their ability to win agonistic interactions (the culturally significant Batailles des Reines). Using this dataset, we investigated the quant genetics of social dominance, a trait with an indirect genetic component (direct and indirect genetic effects).
