A squirrel leaps from above and knocks a seven-week-old Great Horned Owl fledgling from its perch on a low branch in a pine tree on Thursday, May 14, 2026. NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.

Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm.

For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. https://www.thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-anthropic-nearly-walked-out-on

One (small-ish) advantage for writing tie-ins is that sales can create a track record for sales reps to show booksellers. That drops as an author establishes one, preferably of their own work, but it helps for those starting out.

As a figure in gaming, Warren Spector is an even more important bridge between RPGs and computer games than Sandy Petersen. In retrospect, Deus Ex wasn't a breakthrough but a high-water mark—"with the right kind of eyes you can almost see […] that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."

Happy #Batman* Day! * Batman created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger.
Ty Templeton comic: What If Bob Kane Had Gone Ahead and Created Bat-Man Without Bill Finger?

A comic strip presents the perfunctory crime-fighting debut of Bat-Man, a red-suited blond hero wearing a domino mask rather than a cowl and a set Da Vinci-esque wings, who arrests a nondescript gangster, with no sign of Robin, Commissioner Gordon, Batmobile, or colorful rogue's gallery.
