So the ‘negotiation’ involves blowing smoke up Putin’s arse, asking him what he wants then attacking Ukraine for refusing to concede it. Never forget the huge swathe of UK media & political figures who celebrated Trump’s ascent while claiming to care about Ukraine. Absolute heels, the lot of them.

Labour seems totally incapable of cleaning up our water. Banning bonuses is least they should do (& water companies are getting round it anyway). Re-announcing old pledges & peddling myths about cost of nationalisation won’t cut it. Bring water into public hands now #bbclaurak

Cutting "red tape" (aka public protections), as Reeves is doing, does not save money. Instead, it transfers costs from the rich to the poor. Other people pay for financial recklessness, filthy rivers, air pollution, lax building standards and consumer rip-offs. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Welfare bill climbdown will have ‘a cost’ at budget, says UK minister. Another tactic for driving down people's aspirations. UK can bail out banks, subsidise corporations, fund wars but somehow thecan't tackle poverty. Last yr HMRC didn't collect £46.8bn of taxes; over £500bn since 2020.

Today is sad indictment of how we make policy in this country. Our view on the disability benefits cut vote.
"Today is a sad indictment of how we make policy in this country. Quote from Max Mosley, senior economist: We've ended up with a rushed and poorly designed set of reforms to disability benefits as a scramble to find government savings after GDP growth was lower than expected following the autumn budget. Something has gone seriously wrong here. How have we ended up in a world where 1 percentage point error in our GDP forecasts cascades down into pushing a quarter of a million people into poverty?"

Only 15% of MPs were elected with a majority of votes in their constituency; most votes cast were for losing candidates. Which means 85% of MPs were elected on a minority vote. We need a voting system which ensures that the person elected has the broadest range of support of the candidates standing.

Farage and the far right in general come from a grievance culture. If you do what they want, even maximally – Brexit – they’ll move the goalposts and keep moaning. If you engage seriously with their concerns, they’ll find new ones. You will never satisfy them, because they don’t want to be satisfied
