My cat is going to be so pissed when I get out of the hospital and her dry-food dispenser goes back to its normal schedule and she has to eat the stupid healthy wet food for her main meal.

I’m currently pregnant and buying all the baby things. I have friends who had a child right around the time the tariffs first went into place. The increase in costs between what they paid and I am now paying is astounding. And baby products aren’t cheap to begin with!

This article barely scratches the surface of problems for makers of all kinds on Etsy. If you’re going to buy a pattern on Etsy, make sure you check for non-AI images of completed projects from customers in the reviews.

That LA county should be a single administrative district is my most radical political opinion. And yes, it’s partially motivated by a deep hatred of Beverly Hills NIMBYism.

I used to work at a major museum. At our all staff meeting one year the director was talking about attendance, and apparently we had, plus our minus a couple thousand, the exact same number of visitors every year for like fifty years. The ONLY year that was different was the year we had King Tut.

Having a half hour conversation with my wife at too early o’clock on a Sunday morning in which we both ultimately agree that it’s better for people to not be randomly killed. Glad that’s a point we agree on.

Watching Ever After as an adult and, uh, Henry sure does a lot of refusing to listen to Danielle or take her emotions and reactions into account. Sir, shut up and listen to the person who you are claiming to love instead of bulldozing over her.

There’s something about this line of thinking that’s very much like a toddler having a tantrum because their mother offered them spaghetti or unseasoned tofu and broccoli, but they want pizza so they’re not going to eat anything and they’re going to make everyone else miserable, too.

Incidentally the folk tale about John Henry is basically this, except for tunnel boring. It encapsulates the anxieties of the blue collar worker, but it’s also wrong about the merits of automation.

I ordered something perishable for a dear friend whose father passed earlier this week. Unfortunately it needed to go to small town Iowa within 48 hours, and apparently FedEx can’t accomplish that, as we’re now over 5 hours past that window and it’s still not there. 😒

This is a really good thread on Emanuel’s worst actions as mayor. But it doesn’t get into all the little things that made him suck as a mayor. Like when he publicly cussed out the leadership of the teachers union for striking. I still can’t believe we re-elected him over Chuy Garcia.

There’s at least 14 LEO’s from various agencies across the street from our house right now, clearly trying to get some kind of probable cause to manifest itself so they can get into some guy’s sedan.

Whole we’re here, the importance of family is the overarching theme in Sinners and it’s what gives the film its structure and elevated it above “vampire film” or “historical drama about racism” and stitched the two parts together.

Silicon Valley raises money on hype and FOMO. This is the same as the self-driving car hype, and crypto/NFT hype, and AI hype. It’s less enticing to put millions into a car/finance/Data/Space company that will maybe revolutionize an industry in 50 years, than in 5 or 10.

Was literally in the group chat before bed talking about how disappointed we are with Bass and mocking “large asphalt repair” (aka avoiding compliance with ADA and other laws on a technicality). To think Mike Bonin was bullied off the council by a pack of racist homophobes but she’s still mayor.

The weird thing about working for the National Weather Service is you can pop onto a meeting and say something innocuous like “they keep saying it’s going to rain, but it hasn’t started yet” only to realize you’re meeting with “they.”

There’s a reason the last president to even toy with invading Iran before this one was GWB, and he never got anywhere close to serious about it. And that this one threw the invade Iran Warhawk (Bolton) out of his last administration. If you wanted more proof his brain turned to pudding.

I hesitate to say this, because applying medieval history to fantasy novels is silly. But Pratchett was writing in the imaginary medieval, so: the level of poverty a medieval peasant was in was WILDLY below what even the poorest Americans or Europeans experienced.

I am going to become @whstancil.bsky.social. This comment is in the context of a Reddit thread about whether The Great Depression and WWII were more or less stressful than the current era. I’m begging you, go read a book. Or a Wikipedia. Or a chapter in a history book for ten year olds. PLEASE.
Reddit comment:
It affected consumer behavior but compare the depression to the modern current financial crisis. The depression was bad but politicians actually took measures to fix things, then the war brought growth with it.
Once the war ended we saw even more economic growth. Plus my point was not that adults and kids weren't affected as much by these events, it was that specifically kids didnt really understand what was going on. It’s like how in 2008 kids growing up knew their parents were stressed but didnt really grasp what was wrong with the economy.

A pro-tip from my last month at work: if you maintain a humble and cooperative attitude at work, people will forgive and forget your small mistakes. If you’re arrogant, no matter how good you are, even the slightest error will be held against you.
