Tom Hunter: “this book is not a small contribution to that fight but a vital part of it.” That’s a wrap folks! Until next year!

“I wrote this book from a place of deep despair, but it’s not about despair it’s about hope. And it’s been a very hard summer to feel hope, but we need all the stories we can muster to gather hope and create a better future.”

Emma is visibly shocked. Massive thanks to the Clarke judges, and congratulations to the nominees - what an amazing shortlist. A shoutout to her parents and sister, and her agent and editor and partner in crime and life.

“Who controls the past, controls the future.” The first winner was a little known book called The Handmaid’s Tale. Thus started a long tradition of causing controversy, but sometimes, in time, the judges are proved right all along.”

Two toasts - one for everyone who’s contributed to the awards - judges, authors, organisers, funders… the whole team who brought this together. Another toast to absent friends. Introducing Dr Andrew M Butler - chair of judges for the Arthur C Clarke Awards.

Arthur C Clarke would’ve found it very funny that we timed this event to miss football but didn’t clock the solar eclipse. >130 books were entered in this the 40th anniversary edition of the Arthur C Clarke Award.

So it’s the BSFA coverage of the @clarkeaward.bsky.social We start with an introduction from Tom Hunter, director of the Clarke Award. Apparently fire alarms are real, but second eclipses aren’t. The timing of the award was altered so that attendees could experience the eclipse. 👇

I'm very excited by this! I absolutely loved The Blazing World back when I studied it. Such a fascinating look at a utopia. It tickles me that Margaret Cavendish wrote an honest-to-god isekai in 1666.
