This pride month, if you’re not plugged in, please take a moment to think about what you specifically can do to support trans kids under attack. I get asked all the time about steps people can take, so I hope at least one person takes this to heart. I’ll be adding throughout June. A thread.🧵

Not mentioned: I did cry on four (4) separate occasions. Kiara was one of the first friends I made in grad school and the first in our cohort to defend their dissertation. We only recently became lab mates in addition to friends and I am so lucky to call her a colleague and friend.

Sometimes, being in two labs is a lot. Getting to attend the dissertation defenses of all of the people I get to call my lab mates makes me forget that. Congratulations to the newly-minted Dr. Kiara Brown :-D

Experiencing the emotional roller coaster of the editorial feedback provided with a desk rejection genuinely strengthening the paper as the revision is both clearer and shorter. I think the pub process is a lot for anyone (esp. grad students), but kind and constructive critiques go a Super Long Way.

BREAKING: Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who refused to issue same-sex couples' marriage licenses, loses her appeal at the Sixth Circuit of a lawsuit she lost at trial that was brought by same-sex couples whose constitutional right to marry she violated. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS
FOR THE SIXTH CIRCUIT
DAVID ERMOLD; DAVID MOORE,
Plaintiffs-Appellees,
No. 24-5524
V.
KIM DAVIs, individually,
Defendant-Appellant.
Appeal from the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky at Ashland.
No. 0:15-cv-00046-David L. Bunning, District Judge.
Argued: January 30, 2025
Decided and Filed: March 6, 2025
Before: WHITE, READLER, and MATHIS, Circuit Judges.OPINION
HELENE N. WHITE, Circuit Judge. Defendant-Appellant Kim Davis, in her capacity as the clerk of Rowan County, Kentucky, refused to issue a marriage license to Plaintiffs-Appellees David Moore and David Ermold. Plaintiffs sued Davis under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, claiming that Davis violated their constitutional right to marry. After several interlocutory appeals, the district court entered judgment for Plaintiffs on liability and a jury awarded them compensatory damages. Davis now appeals, arguing that she is entitled to qualified immunity, that she has affirmative defenses to liability under the Free Exercise Clause and the Kentucky Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and that Plaintiffs' evidence of their emotional distress was insufficient to support the jury's award. We AFFIRM.
