It is possible that a wealth tax could be instituted to support investments in social welfare and public infrastructure without unduly hampering industrial investment or productive economic activity.
A detail from the front page of today’s Chicago Sun-Times that features a photo of one of Michael Jordan’s jerseys and this headline:

Jordan jersey from Game 3 of'98 Finals sells for record

Fierce Pigeon Interview

I caught up with the pigeon who's taking Spunkton by storm for being "fierce" (stylish and confident).

What does a typical day look like for you?
oooo

Is there anything you're really interested in lately?

This ended up being a good time; recommended to the crimistas. Looking forward to the second one next year.

The light crime novel I just started (Killer Vibes, by Jack Friday) just made me gasp with recognition at the phrase "the twenty-first century's lethal convenience". That's what it is! Lethal convenience!

The Chicagoan (1929)
Nat Karson. The Chicagoan magazine cover dated October 26, 1929, with a black background and bold lime-green title lettering. A stylized Art Deco football player in a helmet and uniform lunges dramatically over a stadium, rendered in vivid yellow, red, orange, green, and pale blue lines. Tiny marching-band figures appear below, with “Price 15 Cents” printed at the upper right.

Respect the flag
The Mars cheese castle seal. It has eight rounded points The center shows three towers. The one on the right is shorter than the one in the middle, which has an open portcullis. Both of these towers are crenellated. To the left of these towers is a peaked tower. The towers are above the word "Mars", which is in a vaguely pointy European-ish font. At the upper left of the seal's center is a ringed planet. The entire thing is a flat red color on a white background.

Also Matthew Rhys. Both of them have *consistent* accents... that don't exist anywhere in the US. Also they're all nasally in a way their natural voices are not! It's legitimately annoying to watch anyone who went to the Hugh Laurie School of American.

I hate this trend of photographers on the red carpet calling out "Mrs. Holland!" to Zendaya, or "Mrs. Culkin" to Brenda Song, etc. Don't expect these women (it's always women) to smile like it's cute! It is DEEPLY not cute.

Deserves a quiet night
Me, a middle-aged white woman, floating In a blue-lit pool. I am smiling because it's the best. A view of the sky when I do the backstroke. A tree is at lower left. Just to the right of it is a light shooting straight into the sky. It's from the Luxor. Another spotlight crosses it at a 60 degree angle from the SE. Near the top right of the shot there are some unlit Edison bulbs on a wire and you can even see a couple of stars.

Freaked out the niblings by telling them that when I was a kid, there wasn't really bottled water. It was FANCY and had French names and people made fun of you for drinking it. It wasn't a convenience item. They know we didn't have cell phones, but they didn't know this!

Chicago Art Institute. Famous Chicago Attractions postcard series (1953)
Colorful 1953 illustrated Chicago postcard showing an overwhelmed tourist leaving the Art Institute carrying a large modernist painting while surrounded by exaggerated depictions of artworks, including a sword-wielding figure and a snake. A pennant reads “Famous Chicago Attractions,” with bold text below: “Just Visited… Chicago’s Art Institute!”

The Wendell Berry I think of most often, "The Vacation".

Once there was a man who filmed his vacation.
He went flying down the river in his boat
with his video camera to his eye, making
a moving picture of the moving river
upon which his sleek boat moved swiftly
toward the end of his vacation. He showed
his vacation to his camera, which pictured it,
preserving it forever: the river, the trees,
the sky, the light, the bow of his rushing boat
behind which he stood with his camera
preserving his vacation even as he was having it
so that after he had had it he would still
have it. It would be there. With a flick
of a switch, there it would be. But he
would not be in it. He would never be in it.

I learned last night that while Old World porcupines are mostly nocturnal and can't climb, New World porcupines are also active during day and can climb trees. Delighted with my story of a colonizer being all like, don't worry about it, just hop up on that first branch, it can't get you! But OH HO.

My first CD was Revolver, because I have TASTE. Definitely not because I had a crush on the boy who sang "Eleanor Rigby" and played it on the violin (backed by the rest of the string quartet) when the high school orchestra visited my junior high orchestra.

Here's my lock screen, and a a bonus, a copy of my home screen (with the app folders removed).
The time is 9:28 on Monday, August 3rd. The lock screen is informing you of this in a mint green sans serif font. The photo on the lock screen is of the Eiffel Tower, specifically the arced part between two the legs off the Tower, showing its beauiful filigree against a very grey sky.That same filigree part of the Eiffel Tower, but now reflected in a puddle. Both photos taken by me while sitting under the Tower and waiting for a friend in the light rain, in November 2017.

I had (boring, who cares) issues with The Odyssey, but as a film it's undeniable. Samantha Morton as Circe is as good as everyone is saying - she packs so much grief and fury into that short performance.

UGH
There's nothing like teenage diaries for putting momentous historical events in perspective (Banalities and bathos, 31 December). This is my entry for 20 July 1969. "I went to arts centre (by myself!) in yellow cords and blouse. Ian was there but he didn't speak to me. Got rhyme put in my handbag from someone who's ap-parently got a crush on me. It's Nicholas I think. UGH. Man landed on moon."

Maybe you've been thinking about lot about The Odyssey for whatever reason! I recommend breaking up those thoughts by thinking of Edna St. Vincent Millay's "An Ancient Gesture".
"An Ancient Gesture", Edna St. Vincent Millay

I thought, as I wiped my eyes on the corner of my apron:
Penelope did this too.
And more than once: you can’t keep weaving all day
And undoing it all through the night;
Your arms get tired, and the back of your neck gets tight;
And along towards morning, when you think it will never be light,
And your husband has been gone, and you don’t know where, for years,
Suddenly you burst into tears;
There is simply nothing else to do.
And I thought, as I wiped my eyes on the corner of my apron:
This is an ancient gesture, authentic, antique,
In the very best tradition, classic, Greek;
Ulysses did this too.
But only as a gesture,—a gesture which implied
To the assembled throng that he was much too moved to speak.
He learned it from Penelope. . . .
Penelope, who really cried.
