Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hApparently, we learned later, they believed they could just drain this pond through the culvert into that little ditch and down to the creek without incident at all. 120

Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hThe buzzards ate well for a good week after that as the fish that ended up in the field slowly went off. 140
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hI’ve told this story a long time ago, but enjoy the tale of the time they drained the pond across the road. 372
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14h“I’m supposed to cut that grass and bale it up so people can feed it to their horses, and horses don’t tend to care for grass with dead fish in it.” “Oh.” They cut us a substantial check to make up for that mistake. 150
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14h“They were supposed to cut the berm three feet at a time, sir.” “Yeah, well he started with the bottom three feet! What are you going to do about all this hay you’ve ruined?” “I don’t understand, it’s just a grassy field, what’s the problem?” 120
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hAbout 20 minutes later a guy in khakis and a dress shirt pulls up in our driveway while the county road crew is trying to unplug the culvert. Dad’s first words were “what the hell were you thinking?” 120
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hThe pond takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour to drain out while the construction crew just kind of stands there and stares at the mess they’ve created. Dad drives his truck over to find out who’s in charge and tells him to get his boss down there IMMEDIATELY. 120
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hThe water, now flowing like a small river, jumps the road and starts heading straight into the hay field (in green) at high speed. I stood in the road and watched one of our neighbors just pick up bluegill with her bare hands and throw them into a laundry basket out of this stream of water. 140
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hSo the berm’s broken and what starts as a stream rapidly becomes a wall of water rolling across this field, picking up every bit of trash along with all the fish that were in the pond to begin with. When it gets to the culvert, a giant ball of this stuff plugs it instantly. 120
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hHere’s a satellite photo showing roughly where the pond, ditch and field were, for convenience 120
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hOn the other side of the culvert is a small road ditch that we’d helped cut to keep from flooding out the barn on the corner so water would eventually drain down to the creek, but it’s not meant to do more than help move maybe an inch of rain. 120
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hI happened to be outside and saw what was going to happen so I just watched. The backhoe operator dips the arm down into the pond, breaks the berm and a wall of water comes rushing out of this pond down the hill toward the road, where there’s a 24” culvert that runs under it. 130
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hThe rest of the land had been farmed fairly recently and so there was a lot of straw and leaves and other stuff still in the field. So one afternoon, the construction crew rolls up with a backhoe and unloads it right next to the berm that’s holding the pond. 130
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hThe neighbor had a pond on that piece of land that had been stocked as a fish pond for a while when there was a house up there before they’d cleared it, but the pond was still there and in the way of where the highway was going. The construction crew needed to drain this pond to level things out. 130
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hNow, at the same time, they were building a new four-lane across a bunch of the neighbor’s land across the road from the house, uphill from the hay field. This will be important later. 230
Call Me The Brie-ze @briesmith.xyz · 14hOK, so gather around for Story Time! I was in late high school, maybe even a freshman in college when this happened. We had been farming tobacco for years, but Dad took the buyout and so we had farmland that he was figuring out what to do with and decided he’d grow hay for at least the summer. 160
