What does the Greens’ victory in Gorton and Denton mean for the future of British politics? Our panel responds
Greens first, Reform second, Labour trailing – and the Tories losing their deposit. This felt like a rejection of the status quo

Our new report, Supporting organisations to prioritise wellbeing, shows that compassionate, people-centred workplaces are more resilient, sustainable, and better equipped to support their communities💓 Read the full report: esmeefairbairn.org.uk/supporting-o...
Picture of Esmée staff doing some planting with text: In 2024, we offered £5,000 in wellbeing awards to 52 of the organisations we grant fund to help them prioritise the wellbeing of their staff and volunteers.

A year later, we surveyed the recipients to learn how they used the funding and what impact it had. The findings in this report are based on feedback from the 22 organisations that responded to the survey.Text: Impact of the wellbeing awards. 91% of organisations used the wellbeing award to introduce new or different wellbeing initiatives.
The flexibility of the funding was highly valued, with each organisation tailoring their approach to suit its unique needs and ways of working:

3 in 4 survey respondents used some or all the award to support connection through away days, wellbeing retreats, and social and team building activities.
All organisations reported improved team cohesion and relationships because of the award.
3 in 4 survey respondents used some or all the award for individual care work
Over half highlighted the positive impact of the support on individual wellbeing, with access to tailored offers and personal wellbeing budgets leaving staff feeling empowered, valued, and optimistic.
The support was credited with strengthening team dynamics and enhancing workplace culture, which in turn boosted productivity and resilience while reducing staff burnout and absences.Text: Recommendations for funders. Provide long-term, ring-fenced funding for wellbeing, not just in times of crisis
Treat wellbeing as a core cost.
Provide unrestricted multi-year grants with an annual wellbeing component.
Reflect wellbeing in funder behaviour and practice.
Offer guidance on effective and sustainable wellbeing strategies.
Provide access to wellbeing practitioners, mentoring, courses, retreats, or healthcare packages.Quote from a survey respondent: Multi-year grants with a wellbeing component, or unrestricted funding that allows us to respond to emerging mental health needs, would make a significant difference in building a resilient and supported team capable of delivering high-impact, compassionate work.

📣 Out on #FirstView 📣 In their new Critical Perspectives article Neema Begum, Michael Bankole, Shardia Briscoe-Palmer, @dangodshaw.bsky.social & Rima Saini introduce the concept paradoxical representation to understand the actions of ethnic minority officeholders. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
Critical perspective article entitled "Skinfolk, but Not Kinfolk? Paradoxical Representation Among Ethnic Minority Conservative Political Elites in the UK" by Neema Begum, Michael Bankole, Shardia Briscoe-Palmer, Dan Godshaw & Rima Saini.

First paragraph reads: As the number of ethnic minority politicians increase across countries like the United Kingdom and the United States, so too have instances in which these officeholders act against the communities they descriptively represent. In this contribution, we introduce the concept of paradoxical representation which we argue functions through neoliberal, post-racial scripts of color-blindness and meritocracy. Similar to research on gender representation which calls into question assumptions that substantive representation will follow unproblematically from women’s descriptive representation (Celis and Childs 2012), we argue that ethnic minority representatives can act as “post-racial gatekeepers.” This means paradoxically working against rather than for marginalized ethnic minority groups (Saini, Bankole, and Begum 2023). Through political discourse and policymaking, these representatives construct and “gatekeep” hegemonic ideas around race, racism, gender, and migration.
