Remember when Uber started and for a couple years they just operated at a massive loss until they'd driven all the competition out of business and then they jacked rates way up? AI wants to be that, but for everything.

In the past, I’ve written threads about what it’s like to live with #MECFS. I don’t have the bandwidth to do so today. All I’ll say is most of us began with big lives—lives that have become extremely small as a result of the limitations of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. This comic illustrates it well:
Cartoon by Kornelia Paulsen

Six panels:

1. M.E. — HOW IT CAN SHRINK ONE'S LIFE BITS BY BITS

2. BEFORE M.E. — illustration of a big world

3. MILD M.E. — illustration of a home a a couple of nearby buildings

4. MODERATE M.E. — illustration of just a home

5. SEVERE M.E. — illustration of just a bed

6. VERY SEVERE M.E. — illustration of pure darkness

🚨 NSF is already quietly eliminating the SBE Directorate, despite Congress’ mandate that NSF support the behavioral & social sciences. Steps to counter this are in motion. If you - have an SBE proposal under review - serve on an SBE grant panel You can help! Fill out this form: shorturl.at/xuKw2

Share Your Story: Impacts of the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF)
Following the release of the President's Budget Request (PBR) on April 3rd, NSF quickly and quietly took steps to begin to dismantle the SBE Directorate. The Federation of Associations in the Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS) wants to hear about how the SBE Directorate at NSF has supported your research and career. Your stories help FABBS communicate to policymakers and the public what’s at stake when the federal government fails to fund critical sciences. We may follow up for clarification, but we will not share your name or institution publicly without your permission.

Decarbonization has always been inevitable. Almost the entire climate fight has been about how quickly we can accelerate progress, and how long fossil fuel industries and their allies can delay progress. And winning too slowly is the same thing as losing. (ht/ Colin McCarthy)

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again. www.nature.com/immersive/d4...
This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.

One argument I used to make to my students about why it was important to learn history (and historical thinking) is that someone was always going to be trying to tell you things were natural or had always been this way and that you needed to be able to see that as an exercise of power.
