Spokane passed a bunch of housing reforms recently—eliminating parking minimums, increasing height maximums, reducing lot minimums, allowing more missing middle, & expanding property tax exemptions for new multifamily projects—and now they're building record amounts of housing
a graph of Spokane housing permitting over time, showing it spike in 2023/2024

A LOT of extremely online leftism comes from the exact same place as extremely online rightism: the internet propping up a permission structure for adherents to indulge in whatever makes them angry, which, wouldn't you know it, is often "Things were better in the good old days and we must retvrn"

I don't think taking credit is so simple people have to actually be listening. Shouting doesn't work if the mic is turned off.

Before people get mad at what trump does they have to be in touch with reality enough to know what he's doing. Lots of voters will accept whatever bullshit lies/excuses/scapegoat that Trump spews for the consequences of his and his voters' actions.

It doesn't even matter what he says. The voters are too stupid to listen.

For that matter intangible things can provide immense value. A new patent reflects an abstract idea but it results in real technological improvement.

it's not that I don't think that grey areas exist on social issues, it's that I don't see the point in engaging with on them with right-wingers, because their actual intent, regardless of what they say, is clearly just being an asshole to some group of people they consider subhuman

Tariffs on foreign inputs to domestic production will result in very real cost increases for US manufacturing. This wouldn't suddenly work in our favor if we had more factories.

They won't. Their kids might. I'm pretty sure most people alive in the US are like the silent generation right now. Wrong about a lot and stuck in our ways such that society will only improve through attrition.

It didn't occur to me that someone interested in antitrust would not see protectionism as limiting competition. It seems so obvious. My faith in humanity is so low it's drilling to the center of the earth.

One of the weirder parts of the election post-mortem media has been the shared assumption—held by seemingly everyone issuing prescriptions to the Democrats—that the electorate is engaged with reality, and that everyone’s reality is the same.
