There's a phrase I love, from physicist Wolfgang Pauli. In German: "Das ist nicht nur nicht richtig; es ist nicht einmal falsch!" In English: "That's not only not right, it's not even wrong!" What does it mean for an idea to be "not even wrong" in science?

On the left: Wolfgang Pauli (1900-1958), Austrian physicist working in Zürich, Switzerland. On the right: the energy spectrum of the electron, which is emitted in a β-decay; the observation does not match the original expectation of a sharp peak. Pauli solved this puzzle by postulating the emission of an additional particle, which was hypothetical at that time.

The bottom line is that 2024 temps are much more in line w/expectations than 2023, lending more weight to the notion that 2023 was more blip-like. However, the accounting for recent temperatures is still ongoing. Blog post keeping track of new studies is here: www.realclimate.org/index.php/ar...

6 from nine planetary boundaries now breached... Then I started to follow the boundary framework it had been three... www.planetaryhealthcheck.org/storyblok-cd... #climate #uöäü1biosphere

These three are not breached till now: 7. Ocean Acidification (6.6): While the global surface ocean aragonite saturation state is within
its Safe Operating Space, it is close to breaching its safe level. New studies suggest that
even the current conditions may be problematic for multiple marine organisms, indicating an
urgent need to re-evaluate the safe boundary.
8. Atmospheric Aerosol Loading (6.7): The difference in aerosol optical depth between hemi-
spheres is decreasing, indicating progress toward safer levels, though some regional pat-
terns show opposing trends.
9. Stratospheric Ozone Depletion (6.8): The current total amount of stratospheric ozone is
within the Safe Operating Space, but values are still below the mid-20th century levels.

1. Climate Change (6.1): Both the atmospheric concentration of CO2 and the total anthropogenic radiative forcing at the top of the atmosphere have exceeded their safe levels.
2. Change in Biosphere Integrity (6.2): Both the loss of genetic diversity and the functional integrity of the biosphere have exceeded their safe levels.
3. Land System Change (6.3): The globally remaining forest areas for all major forest biomes (tropical, boreal and temperate) have fallen below the safe levels.
4. Freshwater Change (6.4): Human-induced disturbances of both the blue and the green wa- ter flows have exceeded the safe levels.
5. Modification of Biogeochemical Flows (6.5): Both the global phosphorus flow into the ocean and the industrial fixation of nitrogen (the extraction of nitrogen from the atmosphere) are disrupting the corresponding nutrient cycles beyond the safe level.
6. Introduction of Novel Entities (6.9): The amount of human-made substances that are re- leased into the environment.

Its simple: if ocean surface temperatures go to such an extent up you've got a serious problem Houston Its not natural variability but a non-linear feedback feeding on itself being in essence a vicious cycle driving global SSTs ametsoc.net/sotc2023/SoC... #climate #uöäü1SST #uöäü1feedbacks

Large areas of the global surface oceans had their highest or top ten surface temperature event in 2023. Most of oceans is yellow - top 5...

The extreme increase in SST had not been caused by the El Nino in 2023 as in 2024 we have similar levels of SST anomalies. The graphs show SST anomalies during the 1998 El Nino, 2015, and the one in 2023 when most of the oceans became exceptional warm during the course of the year. Especially, the whole Atlantic basin went nuts. But also large parts of the Southern Ocean.

Global temperature increase global and different basins. As the graphs only include 2023, its noteworthy that in 2024 also the Indian Ocean went nuts in terms of SSTs. Other basins are the North Atlantic ocean that went nuts in recent years, especially in 2023 and the Southern Ocean. Important, its not SOx reductions over the shipping lines, does not fit out of several reasons.

Most important here: global ocean surface temperatures increased by 0.1°C per decade since the 50s. Since 2012 they went sky high with 2014 to 2024 by some ~0.4°C - the warming speed quadrupled - oops!
