6 days ago, the EAC-SADC summit directed army chiefs to meet within 5 days to provide direction on an immediate ceasefire and develop a securitisation plan for Goma. In the meantime, M23/AFC consolidated its control over Goma and progressed Southward, taking control of Kavumu airport today.

Although I welcome the debate on international sanctions and measures to stem the crisis in DRC, we should prioritise the immediate needs of those suffering from conflict and thus focus efforts on humanitarian access and care first. This requires involvement from multiple parties (1/2)

🟥DR Congo UPDATE - Fighting between the M23/AFC, the FARDC and their respective allies has resumed with increased intensity in North and South Kivu. MSF is supporting the Kyeshero Hospital in Goma and continuing the care for patients in other areas of North and South Kivu.
Text in image reads: Since December 2024, several fronts have opened in Lubero and Masisi in North Kivu, before moving towards South Kivu in Minova and Numbi. Fighting is closing in on Goma, North Kivu, with intense clashes in Sake.

The humanitarian consequences for people in the region are very serious. According to the United Nations, almost 400,000 people have again fled the fighting since the beginning of January. Tens of thousands of displaced people have headed for camps around Goma, where more than 650,000 people were already surviving in extremely unhygienic conditions, without suitable shelter and lacking everything: food, water, health care, etc.

Displaced people have not been spared the fighting. Rockets have been fired near camps and facilities where people have taken refuge. It's appalling and unacceptable.

We are likely to see further international condemnations of M23 and concerns about the humanitarian consequences of their advances, but here is a fact: only half (!) of total humanitarian funding needs for the DRC are met, while governments continue to slash development and humanitarian budgets.
