Lucky enough to see this photogenic bear yesterday.
The image shows a young black bear sitting in long grass. Its mouth hangs slightly open as it is smelling the air, probably the offscreen french fries in the car. It looks towards the left of the image. The fur is a mix of black and rust color, flies and green burrs are sporadically dispersed across the head. Its nose is very cute.

Another great Christmas addition to my collection. I’m excited to give these a read/look over during the break.
The image shows two books. Both books have a black background.

On the left is Who Really Wrote the Bible by William M Schniedewind. On the cover is a fragment of the first verse of Genesis found in Cave 4 of Qumran (4QGen-g fragment 1).

On the right is the book The Biblical Qumran Scrolls Volume 1: Genesis to Kings edited by Eugene Ulrich.

A fun quote from an Aramaic Letter between siblings 6/5th c. BCE: “(7)But what is this, that you have not sent a letter (1)to me?! [For] me, a serpent bit me and I was dying. Yet, you did not send [word to inquire] (2)if I was living or dead! I have sent this letter about your welfare!” — TAD2.5
This image shows a scan of an ancient Aramaic letter. It is divided into two parts. The top portion (recto) is cropped in the photo so only the last two lines are visible. The bottom is cropped so only the top two lines are visible. The script is not particularly clean and the hand writing is slanted across the papyrus somewhat haphazardly.

One year ago today, I was lucky enough to witness a total solar eclipse. It’s easy to see why these events held such fascination to the ancients.
The image depicts the moment before the moon covered the sun during the total solar eclipse in 2024. While the bright solar disk is being obscured, the hot gases that surround it are being revealed as a soft cloud like a cotton ball laid around a circle. The bottom left has a bright white light, and looks like a ring with a large stone. The image depicts the moment of totality during the 2024 Solar eclipse. The image is a wide shot with cars in the foreground, leafless trees in the midground and a hazy sky with a bright white dot. The sky is dark around the eclipse but brighter at the edges. The image depicts the moment the moon covered the sun during the total solar eclipse in 2024. I imagine the letter to the King of Ugarit was met with little enthusiasm. There’s nothing like asking for help and being diplomatically told to deal with it yourself. Note: I could not find an image of RSL 1 so an example letter was attached. #ancientbluesky #classicsbluesky
The images depicts a block of text that is a translation of a Letter from the King of Alashiya to the King of Ugarit around the end of the 13th century BCE. Next to this block text is an image of a clay tablet with cuneiform writing on it. The image of the clay tablet is not the actual translation of the letter, but offers a visual representation of a letter. In this case, I could not find an image of the text that was translated (catalogue number RSL 1) so I used a letter from Talmiyanu to Tarriyelli (catalogue name RS 15.008).

The block text and focus of the post is as follows:

Thus says the king, tell Ammurapi, King of Ugarit: May you be well and may the gods protect your well being.

Regarding what you previously wrote to me: “Enemy ships were sighted at sea!” If it is true that ships were observed, reinforce yourself. Where are your troops and chariots? Are they not with you? If not, who will deliver you from the enemy? Surround your cities with walls and bring your troops and chariots into them. Watch out for the enemy and make yourself very strong.

— (Likely) King of Alashiya to King Ammurapi of Ugarit late 13th c. BCE

6/6! I can report that incantations are ineffective against the 4am willpower of my 6 month old.
The image shows an ancient grey clay tablet dating back to 600 BCE. Its edges are damaged and a large crack goes through the middle of the it. In the tablet is in a writing system that used wedges to create triangular symbols as a writing system. The tablet contains 6 incantations to quiet a child, but the first is too damaged to make much sense of. So the second text is translated.

The fragmentary text translates to:

Incantation: Offspring of darkness, child of . . . Your mother . . .You have kept your father awake, you mother cannot live a normal life . . . (25) the laḫmu are disturbed, Ea awakens. Be quiet
like still water. Like a sleepless cattle herder, let sleep fall on you. The incantation is not mine; it is an incantation of Ea and [Asal-luhi . . . Incantation.]
