I mean if you didn’t do the stupid security system they would be comically overbuilt. I don’t think stupid operating practices are negating of the fact stations are overbuilt

That too. I mean it all kind of lines up in the ways Japan distorts its economy in order to prop an existing political economy. But those spikey New Years super demand isn't speaking healthy work-life balance.

One thing to keep in mind from the Japanese experience, is that if you have your people going on holiday more because you work less/have more consumption spending then you increase ridership (underrated reason why TGV outperforms Shinkansen in ridership intensity).

There's gonna be one more spurt out of desperation next 5 years. HSR actually isn't especially overbuilt. If TGV can go to Rennes (230,000) and Shinkansen to Niigata/Akita (less than 1 million), then China with a weaker legacy network has room to grow.

This is also true of anti-constitutional extremism in general. Die Linke's call for uncompensated seizure of private apartments is being legitimized on the center-left on "but CDU voted with AfD" grounds (on Stolpersteine) and in turn further drives CDU to vote with AfD more (e.g. in Saxony-Anhalt).

Legalizing taller single-stair apartment buildings is a good idea because it makes housing more affordable, while still being safe. But even billionaires should support this reform. It will let them ostentatiously display their status by building optional second stairs, the way the gentry used to.😊

I'd actually trust Mitsubishi/Kawasaki with doing subs more than I would the AUKUS consortium. Taigei class is a beast. Credible deterrent doesn't need Boomers, as DPRK/Israel/Pakistan/India and pre-2010 PRC.

Some rail construction costs in 1960s-70s West Germany. Not everything is disaggregated by line, but many things are, including the S-Bahn tunnels. The Munich numbers are close to what one sees in broader media, so I'm confident the other numbers are right too. dserver.bundestag.de/btd/05/038/0...

The UK state ideology is that 1940s Britain was the only legitimate form of Britain. That has consequences. It has no ideology of change, only eternity. Because it would imply England has right to exist beyond Britain.

Trump's sanctioning of the ICC is funny, given that he was supposed to stop needless and wasteful American involvement abroad and instead is following almost every line of the neocon GOP foreign policy crusade. Go after Iran? Check. Infinite support for Israel forever? Check. Kill the ICC? Check.

That's a bit mean. As revolutions go they did what they said on the tin a lot more than others. Meiji Japan is better than Edo Japan in everything except painting. Also what misleading about 明治維新 is the translation 維新 doesn't mean restoration. Its something like reformation or renewal.

It is no accident Labour is pro-PR in Celtic states, and anti it in "the Country". A British State Nationalist has to oppose English democracy, explicitly channelling into a politics based on hatred of foreigners and disliked minorities.

Yeah but its also a state death condition as it prevents the ability to control English political options, Labour is visibly targeting the anti-Brexit opposition parties more than Reform-Tories in its gerrymander/devo policies. That's why in 1999 strongest opposition within Labour was Brown.

This happens with TfL too, which is by far the most efficient operator in the UK. The right focuses on driver salary (ignoring they broke staffing pipeline) while pushing TfL to fire engineers. Oh and its not like talk about where TfL is ops wasteful (DLR train guards).

This isn't really that new. Reaganism/Thatcherism fundamentally believed in the redemptive power of state control of society. They hated rules based bureaucracies for being accountable to people and principles other than theirs. Anti-state statism.

I'd rejoin too. I just think the price is the end of the UK. It has no reason to exist in the EU. Explaining English and British Europhobia otherwise engages in random cultural essentialism. As Wyn-Jones and Hendersen its multi-national nature of the UK that explain why UK was and is so Europhobic

You cannot escape the structure of Hard Brexit without a referendum. Fundamentally the trajectory of the UK is towards Turkish styles dysfunction adversarial dependency and democratic backsliding. To admit the UK is too weak to succeed on its own is to invite state failure.
